The scientific conference "Forty Years of Training and Research in Sino-Vietnamese Studies" was organized by the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, on November 16, 2012.The workshop was attended by Associate Professor Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu – Vice Rector of the University, scientists and researchers from universities and research institutes, lecturers and students from the Faculty of Literature. The main content of the workshop focused on discussing the following key issues: reminiscence and emotions about the field of Sino-Vietnamese studies; issues in Sino-Vietnamese training; and specific issues in Sino-Vietnamese research. In his presentation, "Training of postgraduate Sino-Vietnamese researchers in recent years," Associate Professor Dr. Pham Khac Manh (Director of the Institute of Sino-Vietnamese Studies) stated that the number of people interested in Sino-Vietnamese heritage is not large, but not small either. The associate professor argued that it is necessary to gradually help Vietnamese people today understand the Sino-Vietnamese heritage, and to do so, Chinese characters and Nôm characters must be taught in schools. In reality, there is currently a severe shortage of experts in Sino-Vietnamese studies. The question then arose: "How to most effectively exploit the potential of the field of Sino-Vietnamese studies?" According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Vuong (Head of the Department of Medieval Vietnamese Literature, Faculty of Literature), one of the key tasks affirming the unique characteristics of the Sino-Vietnamese Studies specialization is the processing of texts. This work still remains a massive volume. Therefore, a large number of personnel working for many more years is needed to adequately process this source of texts. Furthermore, the need for Sino-Vietnamese studies extends beyond the realm of linguistics and literature, and certainly does not stop at merely "familiarizing oneself with the characters" and effectively processing various types of texts. Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong (Department of Sino-Vietnamese Studies, Faculty of Literature) addresses the issue of Nôm script training at the university level from a new perspective: viewing it from a technological standpoint. He emphasizes key characteristics such as: focusing on both the theory and practice of Nôm script; teaching practical skills using original Nôm texts; incorporating Sino-Vietnamese computer science into the curriculum; and updating the teaching of Sino-Vietnamese studies with the latest global achievements. International cooperation in Sino-Vietnamese studies and training… The Sino-Vietnamese Studies Department of the Faculty of Literature - University of Social Sciences and Humanities has, over 40 years of development and growth, trained and contributed to society a highly skilled workforce in Sino-Vietnamese studies. Currently, the Sino-Vietnamese Studies Department of the University is the only institution providing specialized training in Sino-Vietnamese studies at all three levels: bachelor's, master's, and doctoral. The Sino-Vietnamese Studies Department is also one of the 22 undergraduate programs of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, with its own target audience, curriculum, entrance requirements, and awarding a Bachelor of Sino-Vietnamese Studies degree.
