VNU President Nguyen Kim Son delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for the 2017-2018 academic year.
Dear guests, teachers, and all dear students!
Today, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities opens a new school year, which is also the first year of the 62nd student cohort. The school's rich traditions are being increasingly cultivated. Congratulations on the results that the school has achieved in the past school year, its reputation continues to be enhanced domestically and internationally, and its training and scientific research activities have had encouraging developments. Welcome 1,656 high school students from all over the country who have officially become students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular and of VNU in general. Congratulations to all teachers and students on the occasion of starting a new school year. Wishing the school full of new spirit, new vitality and new successes.
Dear ladies and gentlemen!
We are currently implementing an educational philosophy, an output-based approach, taking output products as a measure for scientific research and training activities. All the good descriptions are meaningless if we do not create an output product that can be named, described or counted with high quality standards that can be measured. In that spirit, I would like to spend the first words to confide in you students, the output product, the most important product of our university.
Dear students!
We are living in a time when the natural, social and human worlds are undergoing greater and faster changes than ever before. Climate and environment change, techniques, technology, artificial intelligence, information technology are changing human life profoundly. Every field and issue of life can be digitized. People become "digital citizens". The "real" and "virtual" worlds no longer have boundaries. Information is piled up on the internet with the states of truth - fiction, black - white, good - bad coexisting. The amount of knowledge that humanity has accumulated has become enormous, easy to find vast and challenging. The concept of profession and job names are increasingly flexible and changing. Human communication is carried out indirectly through phone screens, replacing direct and lively communication between individuals. Culture, value systems and human life are changing. The boundaries between the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities are increasingly blurring.
Our beloved Vietnam, a part of the world, is also in an important transition period. The inevitable steps to deeply integrate into the global market economy entail a series of social and human transformation issues. Human resource needs are more diverse and changing than ever. The country in the start-up period needs a generation of young people with aspirations and ambitions to create, start a business, establish a career and create knowledge.
In the general context of the world and Vietnam, how should students study and cultivate themselves? How to establish themselves properly and well? In the context of unlimited knowledge and daily changes, how can we adapt? Obviously, learners need to change the way they learn to adapt to the requirements of the times. Adaptability and adjustment become the most important abilities. But adaptation and adjustment can be achieved when learners have basic knowledge and solid background knowledge. Basic knowledge + core skills of the profession + supplementary skills, good foreign language and computer skills are the keys to success in the new era. Overemphasizing supplementary skills while neglecting basic knowledge, or only knowing basic knowledge but lacking skills are all shortcomings that prevent students from being successful after graduation. Adaptability, dialogue and critical thinking are the conditions for them to become good global citizens.
The world is entering a new industrial era known as Industry 4.0, then there will be Industry 5.0 to 6.0 and many other .0s following each other very quickly. Life will continue to have many fluctuations and unimaginable rapid changes. The diversity of life, knowledge and work is increasing. In that situation, learners must determine to create and accumulate for themselves the constant, the sustainable to cope with that diversity. The constant that learners need to have is a good personality, a sense of social responsibility and love for humanity. This is what helps graduates have a solid foundation for peace and move towards creating a peaceful society.
Dear children!
Students of VNU in general and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in particular, study and train to graduate not only to have a career, a job, and a living. This school encourages you and hopes that you will become intellectuals, people who shoulder the great mission of the country, of society and of humanity, hoping that among you there will be successful entrepreneurs in the future. To achieve great success, you need to have good learning methods, but the most important thing is to have great ambition and vision. Having great ambition is the beginning of a great career. With "great ambition", great difficulties and obstacles will become small under our feet. With great ambition, among the "thousand volumes of scriptures" we will find what we need. With great ambition, we will find a teacher to enlighten us. With great ambition, the temptations and bad habits of society will stay away from us. The road to success begins with determination. People with great ambitions need to take solving social and human problems as their goal. This school is an environment for students to set great ambitions and go far.
The new industrial revolution, the digital age, globalization, marketization, urbanization, etc. bring people many good and convenient things, but also put people in front of many risks. People behave more radically, life has more risks, life and happiness are more fragile... In that context, students of the country's top universities do not only need to learn knowledge to have a job, but also need to learn to live together, learn to develop themselves comprehensively. Learning and research must be established on the foundation of social responsibility and noble humanistic ideals.
Dear students of class 62!
You become students of VNU, of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, this university has a tradition of over 100 years and a rich history of directly building and growing for over half a century with the names of the greatest scientists in the country. This university is currently rated by international rankings as the number 1 university in Vietnam. That is a value, a force. You need to be proud of being students of VNU, of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. You need to learn about the tradition, understand it to be more proud, more responsible. And you are the ones who will continue to make it famous in the future.
Dear teachers!
The above exchanges with students are the output requirements that our school needs to achieve. The inevitable question is, what do we, leaders, managers and teachers, need to do to have such training products? In order for students to have the expected qualities and capacities, we need to innovate a lot. Teachers need to have a real role in guiding students to keep up with the times. To do so, teachers must be pioneers, master their expertise, integrate internationally, and have international dialogue on scientific aspects. The school needs to innovate to become a smart university. It is necessary to innovate university governance. It is necessary to build a large enough social and humanistic database to serve management, learning and research. It is necessary to create an environment of academic freedom, openness and transparency as a basis for creating new knowledge. The road to Hoa Lac has opened wider, we need to do everything to not miss the opportunity to turn the school into a green and beautiful university on a new land.
With a long tradition of training and research, with a team of dedicated teachers, with the conditions that have been and are available, I firmly believe that the teachers and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will succeed on their new journey. A new school year has begun, I would like to wish all teachers, administrators and all students of the school a new school year with many achievements, good health, happiness and success.
Thank you very much!
