Conference of civil servants and public employees and summary of the 2017-2018 school year

On the morning of August 21, 2018, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a conference of civil servants and public employees for the 2017-2018 school year in Sam Son, Thanh Hoa.

The conference listened to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim (Party Secretary, Vice Principal of the School) present a summary report of the 2017-2018 school year and the plan for the 2018-2019 school year.

In the 2017-2018 school year, the training sector continued to achieve many important results. Regarding regular university training activities, the School has implemented many activities to improve training quality: organizing 34 courses using the subject website; organizing 24 seminars on methods of building, managing goals, planning for study and time management, foreign language learning methods, university learning methods... The flexible teaching and learning plan has created convenience for lecturers and students in the teaching and learning process. The number of early graduates of the 2014 course as of the first batch of 2018 is 315 students (8 times higher than the same period last year). The work of developing training programs has achieved some positive results such as issuing the Southeast Asian Studies Bachelor Training Program and implementing the development of 03 socialized training programs including: Journalism, Management Science and Information Management.

Scientific research activities have also achieved many achievements. In the 2017-2018 school year, the School successfully organized 25 scientific seminars/conferences, including 19 international scientific seminars. In the past school year, the School also organized and implemented 28 VNU-level topics and 15 School-level topics. The School's staff published 25 monographs and textbooks, including 02 monographs published in English; 568 domestic publications, including 324 articles in the scientific journal system in the list of scientific journals of the State Council for Professors; 61 international publications (10 articles in the ISI/Scopus system).

The school continues to develop many international cooperation programs with new partners by renewing and signing 25 new cooperation documents with prestigious partners. Currently, there are 12 volunteer teachers participating in teaching and scientific research at the school. The number of students of the school going abroad to study and participate in cultural exchange is 216 times.

Work on staff organization, planning - finance, facilities, innovation in university governance, administrative reform, and development of information and communication technology applications also achieved many new developments.

In 2018-2019, the University identified the following key tasks: arranging and restructuring the industry and majors; adjusting the training program towards increasing connectivity and linkage; continuing to perfect the structure of science and technology towards modernization; developing resources, especially high-quality science and technology human resources, leading experts; successfully completing the quality assessment of the undergraduate training program in Psychology and Sociology according to AUN standards and the training program in International Studies according to the standards of the Ministry of Education and Training; focusing on implementing in-depth investment projects to enhance research capacity, investment projects in training facilities; promoting student support and services activities; effectively implementing the ability to find jobs for students after graduation...

Speaking at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai (Vice President of VNU) highly appreciated the results that the University has achieved in the past school year. However, facing the current context of many difficulties and challenges, the University needs to be more bold in finding solutions to promote development.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, in the coming school year, the University needs to pay attention to a number of solutions such as: promoting high-quality programs for majors that attract a large number of students; building and focusing on investing in a number of key research directions; paying attention to building the University's prestigious academic network in the hearts of domestic and foreign experts - this is a factor that greatly affects the ranking position of the University in particular and VNU in general in the future.

Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University) pointed out the challenges of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the coming time.

In his closing speech at the conference, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Principal of the School) expressed his sincere thanks to all staff for their tireless contributions during the past school year. Thanks to the contributions of teachers, the School has achieved achievements in many aspects of its activities.

In the current context, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh emphasized seven groups of challenges affecting the development of the University. These are solving the problems: shifting the university mindset from focusing on teaching to a university mindset focusing on research; increasing the number of students while improving the quality of students; increasing the number of graduate students and PhD students but not forgetting the needs of the market; between basic scientific research training and the applicability of the training program; between the challenges of the 4.0 revolution and the current limited facilities of the University; between restructuring and streamlining the apparatus and the need to expand new training programs, meeting the interests of staff; between building an elite university and a mass university; between meeting national needs and achieving international standards.

To overcome the challenges, continue to maintain and promote these results in the coming school year, Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh requested: "All staff and lecturers of the School must further strengthen the exchange and discussion to find solutions to overcome the challenges, towards completing the targets set for the 2018-2019 school year".
