The predecessor of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi was the Hanoi University of Letters (established under Decree No. 45 signed by President Ho Chi Minh on October 10, 1945), followed by the Hanoi University of Science (established on June 5, 1956). On December 10, 1993, the Prime Minister issued Decree 97/CP establishing the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, established on the basis of the social sciences departments of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
During seventy years of construction and development, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has always been considered by the Vietnamese government as the largest center for training and research in social sciences and humanities in the country, with the task of training a team of highly qualified basic science staff to serve the cause of national construction and defense.
The school's achievements in training and scientific research are demonstrated through the following titles: First Class Labor Medal (1981), First Class Independence Medal (2001), Labor Hero title in the renovation period (2005), Ho Chi Minh Medal (2010); 10 teachers were awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize and 16 teachers were awarded the State Prize for Science and Technology; 25 teachers were awarded the title of People's Teacher and 56 teachers were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher.
