At the conference, Dr. Tran Ngoc Lieu (Head of Training Department) presented a report on the overview of learning materials and the plan for developing the learning materials system of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities until 2020. Some notable aspects of the University's learning materials development work in the past academic year include: The system of regulations and guidelines on the development, exploitation, use, and management of the learning materials system is still incomplete and inconsistent; the planning for learning materials development is mainly limited to the faculties and departments; the human resources for coordinating this work have not been specifically assigned at the faculty level to assist the faculty leaders in monitoring and managing the learning materials system; investment funds, although 31% higher than the state-mandated amount, are still very low, and there is no specific mechanism to mobilize support and funding for textbook compilation.
According to the Overview Report, the development orientation until 2020 focuses on five main areas for building and developing the school's learning materials:
- By 2020, at least 90% of compulsory subjects will have officially approved syllabi and lecture notes. Simultaneously, 50% of existing compulsory subjects with lecture notes will have their syllabi developed into textbooks.
- Promulgating a set of quality standards for textbooks and lectures, and issuing regulations on the management, development, and use of learning materials in university education.
- Convert all unpublished textbooks, lectures, and reference materials into ebook format and establish a mechanism for exploiting and protecting the copyrights of lecturers and the ownership rights of the University for use in teaching and learning.
- Link existing databases of learning materials in the specialized document rooms of each department to optimize their use.
During a discussion on the university's learning materials work among the faculties, Dr. Vu Van Quan, Head of the History Faculty, proposed the idea of investing in the construction of a History Faculty library as a focal point in building the university's departmental learning materials and archives system. This investment would not only provide important documentation and learning materials but also serve as a place for visitors to showcase to external partners. According to Dr. Vu Van Quan, the History Faculty and the Literature Faculty have a long history and a rich collection of learning materials, including many valuable and rare documents.
Regarding the plan to expand the source of reference materials, "The school should also pay attention to purchasing new translated materials. What is needed now is to establish an interdisciplinary council, which will make decisions or provide advice to the school on purchasing new series of reference materials," shared Ms. Pham Anh Sao, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature.
In addition to the presentations and direct opinions expressed in the hall, the conference also listened to several reports: Some solutions for developing the postgraduate learning materials system by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Quyet; The role of the Information and Library Center of Vietnam National University, Hanoi and its coordination with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the learning materials work of the Information and Library Center of Vietnam National University, Hanoi; The role of lecturers in building and developing the learning materials system; Digitizing the learning materials system and managing digital learning resources.
