Summary of the results of the thesis

Sexual violence in marriage is common in the study area and leaves many serious physical, psychological and social consequences for women. This is a new discovery that opens the way for future research with a wider scope.

Marital sexual assault occurs regardless of geographic location, social class, age, or educational level. Marital sexual assault is closely linked to other forms of domestic violence against women.

Gender issues play an important and central role in marital sexual coercion. They not only affect the sexual roles of each gender but also contribute to the development of violent, coercive and abusive behaviors in marriage.

Concepts of gender norms and gender roles have forced women to remain silent, suppressing their ability to resist and fight against acts of violence.

Lack of respect and lack of attention, sharing and exchange in sexual relations have made women lose interest and sexual needs. In addition, lack of understanding about sex combined with patriarchal thinking has led men to lack of interest and understanding of women's feelings and sexual needs, while women cannot escape their responsibilities as wives to refuse their husbands' sexual needs, so forced sex in marriage is inevitable.

Men are also affected by their rape. They may be physically satisfied but not completely satisfied psychologically. However, they still do not realize that it is the patriarchal ideology and lack of knowledge about women's rights and sexual health that has led them to this situation.

The lack of support from the community and society for cases of marital rape due to limited sexual awareness leaves women with no choice but to stay and endure their husband's rape.

Practical applicability

The results of the thesis can contribute to the development and amendment of sanctions in the decree guiding the implementation of the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence in Vietnam.

Further research directions

The research results suggest a direction for further research on the phenomenon of “Marital rape” to understand the prevalence of this phenomenon as well as to seek solutions to improve women's sexual health and rights.
