Summary of the thesis results: The thesis focuses on studying a number of main issues including: a) The process of formation and development of the Vietnam-China border area. b) Ethnic characteristics and socio-economic dynamics of residents in the Vietnam-China border area, differences and similarities in the approach and classification of ethnic groups in the border area. c) Border development programs of Vietnam and China since 1990 up to now, the content, nature of the development programs and their impacts on cross-border ethnic communities. Focusing on the three issues mentioned above, the thesis has: 1) Provided a historical and comparative view of the formation and development of the concept of border areas and border development strategies in Vietnam and China; 2) Analyze the ethnic characteristics and cross-border socio-economic relations of local communities, and consider them as the driving force of the process of building sustainable border areas; 3) Provide a comparative view of development policies and practices in border areas since 1990 based on the analysis of some specific programs. 12.
