10. Summary of the thesis results:
This thesis is the first attempt at exploring intertextuality in postmodern films by American director W. Anderson. In its execution, the thesis utilizes postmodern literary concepts that have been studied and introduced relatively comprehensively in Vietnam as a theoretical and methodological foundation for examining the characteristics of postmodernism and intertextuality in W. Anderson's cinematic works, emphasizing the director's spirit of overcoming postmodernism through its own means.
Intertextuality in W. Anderson's films is diverse, encompassing all fields and levels: the field of film adaptation; the field of subject matter and genre; and the field of narrative art.
When discussing the field of adaptation, this thesis emphasizes a typical form of adaptation: inspired adaptation. This free adaptation style allows directors to translate works from various art forms (literature, drama, opera, etc.), including non-art forms, and from various artistic trends (romanticism, realism, modernism) into postmodern works with a satirical spirit expressed at both parody and pastiche levels. This shows that the textual relationship between cinema and other art forms always holds potential, capable of opening up a different, seemingly endless space of existence. Anderson's film stylistic system, through its filming techniques and staging, demonstrates this immense potential.
To highlight the distinctive cinematic language of W. Anderson and effectively convey the director's artistic messages, this thesis attempts to analyze the unique cinematic techniques and skills in his films.
By analyzing the innovations brought about by intertextuality in W. Anderson's postmodern films, this thesis attempts to further explain the relationship between literature and cinema in the context of the intercultural transition of the 20th and 21st centuries. Through this, we hope to make a certain contribution to the theory of film adaptation, which has achieved some success in Vietnam.
Introducing the postmodern films of independent American director W. Anderson, this thesis aims to explore one of the emerging trends in world cinema, hoping to make a contribution to Vietnamese cinema, which is currently yearning for high artistic achievements to integrate with the global film industry.
