The thesis is the first experiment written about intertextuality in the films built in the postmodern trend of American director W. Anderson. During the implementation process, the thesis applied the concepts of postmodernism in literature that have been studied and introduced relatively comprehensively in Vietnam to serve as a theoretical and methodological foundation for examining the characteristics of postmodernity and intertextuality in the films of W. Anderson, emphasizing the spirit of overcoming postmodernity by itself of this talented director.
Intertextuality in W. Anderson's films is diverse, in all fields and levels: the field of film adaptation; the field of themes, genres, and the field of narrative art.
When referring to the field of adaptation, the thesis emphasizes the typical form of adaptation: inspiration. This type of free adaptation allows the director to translate from works of many different art forms (literature, drama, opera, etc.), including non-art forms, from many different artistic trends (romanticism, realism, modernism) to postmodern works with its satirical spirit expressed both at the level of parody and pastiche. This shows that the textual relationship between cinema and art forms always contains potential, can open up another seemingly endless space of existence. Anderson's film style system through the stages of filming techniques and film staging shows us that great potential.
To emphasize the characteristics of W. Anderson's cinematic language to effectively convey the director's artistic messages, the thesis attempts to analyze the unique cinematic techniques and techniques in his films.
From the analysis of the innovations brought about by intertextuality in W. Anderson's postmodern films, the thesis attempts to further explain the understanding of the relationship between literature and cinema in the context of intercultural transition in the 20th and 21st centuries. By doing so, we hope to make certain contributions to the theory of film adaptation, which has achieved some success in Vietnam.
Introducing the postmodern film of the American independent director W. Anderson, the thesis wants to aim at one of the new trends of world cinema with the hope of making some contribution to Vietnamese cinema which is currently yearning for high artistic achievements to be able to integrate with world cinema.
