Chapter 1 of the thesis provided a general overview of the engaged spirit of Buddhism, in which the engaged spirit is understood as the mindset and actions of serving humanity, bringing Buddhist teachings into social life for the benefit of society. This engaged spirit is practiced by Buddhist monks and followers. Upon entering Vietnam, Buddhism blended with Vietnamese culture, forming a Vietnamese Buddhism deeply rooted in Vietnamese cultural characteristics. The engaged spirit became a prominent feature of Vietnamese Buddhism, evident throughout history, especially during the Ly-Tran period. In the present era, with a new context, the engaged spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism continues to be expressed, maintaining and promoting the tradition of "protecting the nation and ensuring the well-being of the people."
Thai Nguyen is a province located in the northern mountainous midland region of Vietnam. Blessed with favorable natural conditions, Thai Nguyen has many opportunities for economic development. The people of Thai Nguyen enjoy a rich and diverse cultural and spiritual life. The presence of numerous ethnic groups living together in the region creates a unique cultural character for Thai Nguyen. Regarding religious beliefs, the people of Thai Nguyen have a foundation in indigenous beliefs, with religious practices reflecting the characteristics of various ethnic groups that are still preserved today. In addition, the people of Thai Nguyen adhere to three main religions: Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism. Buddhism arrived in Thai Nguyen very early, from the time of its introduction to Vietnam. During the Ly and Tran dynasties, many large temples were built, becoming centers of cultural activity for the people. The history of Buddhism in Thai Nguyen is intertwined with the history of building and defending the homeland and country of the heroic people of Thai Nguyen.
Chapter 2 of this thesis analyzes the engaged spirit of Buddhism in Thai Nguyen in history and the present. In previous periods, the engaged spirit of Buddhism in Thai Nguyen was clearly manifested in its contributions to people's lives, with temples becoming centers of cultural and spiritual activity for village communities, and in Buddhist moral values contributing to the formation of Thai Nguyen's morality for millennia. This engaged spirit was particularly evident in the contributions of Buddhism to the struggle to protect the homeland and country of the people of Thai Nguyen in particular, and the people of the whole country in general. In the new era, Buddhism in Thai Nguyen continues to write its historical tradition. The engaged spirit of Vietnamese Buddhism in the current context is shown as follows: In Thai Nguyen, Buddhism plays the role of the religion with the most followers, meeting and serving the needs of the people. Monks and nuns always serve as role models of virtuous and moral lives for the people to follow; Buddhist monks, nuns, and followers diligently abide by the policies and laws of the Party, the State, and the local government; actively participate in patriotic emulation movements; and actively contribute to building a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized Thai Nguyen province. Buddhist monks, nuns, and followers actively participate in social charity activities, contributing to social welfare in the locality. Vietnamese Buddhism in Thai Nguyen province pays special attention to ethnic minorities, contributing to strengthening national unity.
This engaged spirit of Buddhism needs to be promoted, affirming the role and contribution of religious resources in building a more prosperous, beautiful, and civilized Thai Nguyen province.
