The pressure to innovate in universities is extremely high. In the social and humanities field, the pressure is even greater. Self-innovation from each lecturer will directly determine the future of the University.
Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan said that the trend of rapid change in Vietnamese higher education in the context of digital transformation is taking place very strongly today.
The transformation, in fact, has brought certain “positions” and “forces” to the fields of social sciences and humanities – because the world has been affirming the irreplaceable fundamental role of the fields of humanities – arts – ideology – ethics… in society 4.0; also because in recent times, the Party and State have especially emphasized the key role of social sciences and humanities as the foundation and important resources for the development of contemporary society…
The opportunities are there, and have been clearly recognized. However, the challenges for the School are not small, specifically:
In recent years, many social science and humanities training units of many universities have had to dissolve or merge due to lack of students. The School of Humanities, thanks to its position and reputation, has maintained a stable and high-quality source of enrollment - although the total number of candidates applying to the School tends to decrease slightly each year.
While the rate of high school graduates wishing to attend university nationwide is decreasing, the number of private and international universities offering training in social sciences and humanities has been increasing in recent years.
Private and international universities in Vietnam not only train in social sciences that are application-oriented and attractive to learners, but also begin to open programs in the fields of humanities and arts but in an interdisciplinary, modern direction, with pilot major codes that meet the learners' own needs and human resource requirements for the 4.0 labor market.
Quality infrastructure and modern management thinking are the strengths for private and international universities to attract potential students with good economic conditions. More and more parents are willing to invest so that their children can study humanities and arts at domestic universities: modern in terms of facilities - liberal in terms of training philosophy - professional in terms of support services...
“The School of Humanities will face the reality that it is no longer the obvious choice, nor the only choice, for candidates intending to study in the fields of social sciences – humanities – arts; and even less the first-choice training institution for students with both high professional qualifications and good economic conditions.
There will come a time when the learning community will become increasingly demanding; they will not only hear about the tradition of the Faculty of Arts - the essence of General Studies and then automatically choose the Humanities, but will consider the overall conditions to ensure the quality of the School" - Professor Hoang A.Mr. Tuan emphasized.
Professor Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed: “Social sciences and humanities will only be able to fully develop their potential if we perceive, approach, analyze, and apply them to life in a new way: more creative, more practical, and more connected to contemporary life.”
Recalling the speech of Minister Nguyen Kim Son at the 40th Anniversary of Vietnamese Teachers' Day: "The world changes every second, the amount of human knowledge is exploding, the model of a master who knows 10 and teaches 1 is no longer suitable. Instead, teachers must grasp basic knowledge, be good at methods to guide and guide students to seek and develop knowledge, equip themselves and accumulate unlimited knowledge. Accountability, multi-dimensional interaction with students, parents and society also requires teachers to have higher and more complex cultural and social behavior skills", Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan said: The pressure to innovate universities is extremely great. In the field of social sciences and humanities, the pressure is even greater. Self-innovation from each lecturer and staff member, therefore, will directly decide the future of the School.
The University of Social Sciences and Humanities needs to quickly seize the current opportunities to transform them into results, both in scientific research, professional teaching and community service. People say “opportunities are like dawn, if left too long, they will be missed”. The current opportunities for Social Sciences and Humanities to change and make a breakthrough may not be there for too long, they will pass quickly if we do not take advantage of them.
The President of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities hopes that all teachers and staff of the University will continue to strongly innovate university governance, innovate teaching and learning methods, promote updating scientific knowledge, open up new research directions, build new training programs that are both specialized and interdisciplinary - cross-disciplinary to improve the quality of research, training, and community service.
“Only when we dare to embark on the path of innovation and integration, can we welcome the dawn of Humanism on the background of a very new and very different university education system” – Professor Tuan expressed.
With 77 years of tradition and 27 years of construction and development, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has basically affirmed its position and reputation on the map of Vietnamese universities, and has been trusted and cooperated with by international scientific and training partners.
According to Professor Hoang Anh Tuan, the position and reputation of the School today is the blend of the tradition of Literature - the essence of General Studies with the core values of Humanities that have been diligently cultivated by generations of teachers over many years.
Tradition is a resource, an endogenous strength. Every Humanities officer today must have the responsibility to continue to cultivate, especially to find the best solution to promote and strongly multiply that tradition, instead of passively waiting for the future.
“The school is vigorously promoting comprehensive innovation in teaching - research - community service activities to bring the unit to a new stage of development.
To achieve results, the entire staff and civil servants of the school must unite, focus, join hands, and wholeheartedly develop the school according to the motto "Humanity is the foundation - Modernity is the trend" that the school has identified" - Professor Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized.
