Overview of the February 2024 Meeting of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Opening the Conference, on behalf of the School's Board of Directors, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan presented the decision of Vietnam National University, Hanoi approving Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thanh Nam, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Head of the Training Department, to hold the position of Vice Chairman of the School Council.
The Council of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH) performs its duties, powers, and operates in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Higher Education No. 08/2012/QH13 dated June 19, 2012; Law No. 34/2018/QH14 amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Higher Education dated November 19, 2018; Government Decree No. 186/2013/ND-CP dated November 17, 2023 on the National University; Decision No. 26/2014/QD-TTg dated March 26, 2014 of the Prime Minister on promulgating the Regulations on Organization and Operation of the National University and its member higher education institutions; and other current legal regulations. On December 29, 2023, the Director of Vietnam National University, Hanoi issued Decision No. 5270/QD-VNU-HN dated December 29, 2023, recognizing the Board of Directors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities for the term 2023-2028 with 15 members, including representatives of the Party Committee, Trade Union, Youth Union, leaders of member units; lecturers, representatives of staff and workers; and representatives of alumni of the University.
At the first meeting of the University Council of Social Sciences and Humanities on January 16, 2024, 100% of the members unanimously elected Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thanh Nam - Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Head of the Training Department, to the position of Vice Chairman of the Council.
Congratulating Associate Professor Bui Thanh Nam, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan expressed his hope that the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, as well as all members of the Board, would fully utilize their intellect and sense of responsibility to contribute even more to the overall success of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Rector also expressed his confidence and desire for harmonious cooperation in carrying out the common tasks of the three institutions of the University (Board of Directors, Party Committee, and Board of Management).
Speaking at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Thanh Nam expressed his most sincere gratitude for the attention and support from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the School's Board of Directors, and the trust of the faculty and staff.

After presenting the operational plan for February and the first quarter of 2024, Mr. Nguyen Van Thuy specifically reminded the heads of units to ensure that all staff members understand the security, safety, and fire prevention measures during the Lunar New Year holiday: turn off all unused electrical equipment, check vulnerable points, and seal offices to ensure the careful preservation of equipment. The Head of the Administration and General Affairs Department also noted that, in order to ensure the solemn and meaningful organization of the incense offering ceremony at Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam on Saturday, the 8th day of the Lunar New Year (Year of the Dragon), units should register the number of participating lecturers and staff members and send the information to the Administration and General Affairs Department.
Also at the Conference, the Vice Rectors and leaders of the units shared good news about the results achieved in the first month of 2024, emphasizing some key areas to be implemented in February and the first quarter of 2024 regarding training, scientific research, cooperation and development, and university administration and management.
Vice Rector Dao Thanh Truong emphasized several key tasks in scientific research, as well as signing cooperation agreements with organizations, businesses, and universities both domestically and internationally, and welcoming international students for academic exchange.
Vice Rector Dang Thi Thu Huong shared the good news that the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) has approved the proposal to increase the university enrollment quota for the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2024 by approximately 10% compared to the previous year; and the project to open new undergraduate and postgraduate programs is urgently completing the final steps for submission to VNU for approval.
Director of the Communication and IT Center, Dao Minh Quan, shared the plan to upgrade the interface and static information on the ussh.vnu.edu.vn website and requested the cooperation of heads of units and faculty members to ensure the project is implemented on schedule and effectively.
Concluding the conference, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized: 2024 will be a year of fundamental changes to prepare for 2025 with many major events and activities of the University. The University will allocate and issue key performance indicators (KPIs) to each unit to ensure the completion of targets assigned by VNU and the University's own targets, in a way that leverages the strengths and unique characteristics of each unit.
In 2024, in addition to the identified key tasks, the focus will continue to be on training, scientific research, attracting international scholars and students, and sending more students abroad for internships and practical experience.
Heads of units are requested to disseminate and inform their staff and employees about the policy of innovation, improvement, and encouragement of initiative, creativity, and personal responsibility in performing tasks while ensuring adherence to principles and regulations; and to actively participate in student recruitment counseling, promotion of training programs, and scientific and training activities of the University. Each employee, staff member, and lecturer who innovates and changes themselves, from their way of thinking to their actions, will create a very different kind of humanistic culture – traditional yet constantly evolving towards professionalism, modernity, and friendliness.
The Principal also specifically instructed the heads of units to ensure all necessary conditions are met to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon in accordance with the directives, ensuring peace and good health; to organize the incense offering ceremony at the Temple of Literature on the 8th day of the first lunar month of the Year of the Dragon in a solemn, respectful, and safe manner; and to ensure labor discipline after the Tet holiday.
On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, on behalf of the Board of Directors, Rector Hoang Anh Tuan extends New Year greetings to all key staff, faculty, students, and their families of the University, wishing them a year filled with good health, success, and happiness; and together, let us work towards building a more prosperous University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
