Target
The aim of this funding programme is to support doctoral projects in Germany.
Registration object
Young scholars and scientists of outstanding qualifications who have completed a Master's degree or equivalent Diploma, or in exceptional cases, a Bachelor's degree at the latest by the time they begin their studies.
Sponsored Content
Doctoral programmes at a state or state-recognised higher education institution or a non-university research institute in Germany:
- Individual research projects under the supervision of a university teacher or academic advisor
or
- participate in a structured doctoral research program.
Funding period
- Maximum four years; funding period is determined by a selection committee and depends on each applicant's project and work schedule.
- Initial grants are awarded for a maximum of one year. Subsequent grants are contingent upon the selection committee determining the previous grant period to be successful.
- For doctoral projects in Germany that require a multi-year research period, periods of research conducted outside Germany may be financially supported if they are considered important for the success of the candidate's doctoral thesis. The planned stay abroad must be clearly stated in the application in the work schedule and duration and must not exceed one quarter of the total planned funding period.
Value
- Depending on the level of study, monthly payments are:
- 861 euros – for candidates who have completed a master's degree,
- 1,200 euros. - for candidates studying for a doctorate.
- Health, accident and personal liability insurance
- Travel allowance
- One-time research grant
In certain cases, sponsored applicants with a continuous stay of more than 6 months may receive the following additional benefits:
- monthly rent allowance
- monthly allowance for accompanying family members
Candidate Selection
An independent selection committee consisting of expert scientists reviews applications.
Selection criteria:
Education level(college degree certificate, references, list of publications)
- Academic achievements and study time
- (If applicable) Academic achievements after graduation (e.g. list of publications, lectures, conference papers)
- Quality of the research project (documentation: research project presentation, time plan, references, contact evidence, if any, foreign language certificates):
- Quality of presentation of research projects and preliminary work
- Originality, topicality and relevance of the research topic
- Reasons for choosing Germany and name of sponsoring university/research institution
- Feasibility and consistency of work schedule and time plan (analysis and evaluation steps, language skills (if applicable))
- Integrate the individual research project into the overall PhD project (in terms of content/time), if relevant
- The importance of research projects and plans to stay in Germany for study and career plans
Additional criteria(documents: resume, if any, certificates):
- Additional knowledge and skills (e.g. through professional or volunteer activities, additional training)
- Engage in issues of academic autonomy and higher education policy
- Political, social, cultural, family (parental leave or care, etc.), social commitment
The application procedure is done online via the DAAD portal.
Application profile
Certificates, proof of study results, transcripts and scanned translations must be uploaded to the DAAD application portal.
DAAD may request applicants to submit additional notarized hard copies of documents included in the application.
Documents to be uploaded to the DAAD application portal:
- Online Application
- Full resume in tabular format (maximum 3 pages)
- List of publications (maximum 10 pages), if any
- A proposal prepared and written by you, describing your previous research experience (maximum 10 pages in total). The proposal is a detailed and extensive description of the research project discussed with your research supervisor.
In the case of applicants applying for funding for individual research projects supervised by a university lecturer (academic advisor)
- Letter confirming supervision by a university lecturer in Germany (academic advisor)
- Research work schedule as planned
In case of planning to participate in a structured doctoral research program:
- Letter of admission to a study programme; may be submitted later before the start of funded research if not already available at the time of application.
- Evidence of existing contacts with the PhD program coordinator in the form of copies of email exchanges.
In addition all applicants must submit:
- Degree or diploma certificate stating final academic grade(s): may be submitted prior to commencement of funded research if not already available at the time of application.
- Other documents to support your application (e.g. employment certificate, evidence of practical training/internship, etc.)
- Depending on the subject's German (onDaF, TestDaF) or English (IELTS or TOEFL iBT or TEM) knowledge certificate
