The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) announces the Doctoral Scholarship Program (Research Funding) in Germany for 2021.

Target

The purpose of this funding program is to support doctoral projects in Germany.

Applicants

Young scholars and scientists of outstanding qualifications who have completed a Master's degree or equivalent diploma, or in exceptional cases, at the latest a Bachelor's degree, at the time they begin their research.

Sponsored content

Doctoral programs at a state- or state-accredited higher education institution or a non-university research institute in Germany:

  • individual research projects under the supervision of a university professor or academic advisor.

or

  • Participate in a structured doctoral research program.

Funding period

  • The maximum funding period is four years; the duration of funding is determined by a selection committee and depends on the individual project and the applicant's work schedule.
  • Initial grants are awarded for a maximum term of one year. Subsequent grants are subject to the selection committee's assessment of the success of the previous funding period.
  • For doctoral projects in Germany requiring several years of research, research phases conducted outside Germany may be financially supported if deemed crucial to the success of the candidate's dissertation. The planned overseas stay must be clearly stated in the application in the work schedule and duration and must not exceed one-quarter of the total planned funding period.

Value

  • Depending on the level of study, the monthly payments are:
    • 861 euros – for candidates who have completed a master's degree.
    • 1,200 euros - for candidates currently pursuing a doctoral degree.
  • Health, accident, and personal liability insurance
  • Travel allowance
  • One-time research grant

In certain cases, grant recipients with a continuous stay of more than 6 months may receive the following additional benefits:

  • monthly rent subsidy
  • Monthly allowance for accompanying family members.

Candidate selection

An independent selection committee comprised of expert scientists reviews the applications.

Selection criteria:

Educational level(University degree certificate, references, list of published works)

  • Academic achievements and research time
  • (If applicable) Postgraduate academic achievements (e.g., list of publications, lectures, conference papers)
  • Quality of the research project (documentation: research project presentation, timeline, references, evidence of contact, if any, language certificates):
  • Quality of presentation of research projects and preliminary work
  • The originality, timeliness, and relevance of the research topic.
  • Reasons for choosing Germany and name of the sponsoring university/research institution.
  • Feasibility and consistency of the work schedule and time plan (analysis and evaluation steps, language skills (if any))
  • Integrate your individual research project into the overall doctoral project (in terms of content/time), if relevant.
  • The importance of research projects and plans to stay in Germany for study and career plans.

Additional criteria(Documents: resume, if available, certificates):

  • Additional knowledge and skills (e.g., through professional or volunteer activities, further training)
  • Engage in matters of academic autonomy and higher education policy.
  • Politics, society, culture, family (paternity leave or caregiving, etc.), social commitment

The registration process is done online through the DAAD portal.

Application documents

Certificates, proof of academic results, diplomas, and scanned translations must be uploaded to the DAAD registration portal.

DAAD may require applicants to submit additional notarized hard copies of documents in their application.

The following documents need to be uploaded to the DAAD registration portal:

  • Online application
  • Complete resume in tabular format (maximum 3 pages)
  • List of published works (maximum 10 pages), if any.
  • Your proposal should be prepared and developed by you, and should describe your previous research experience (maximum 10 pages). The proposal should be a detailed and comprehensive description of the research project discussed with your research supervisor.

In the case where the applicant is applying for funding for individual research projects supervised by a university faculty member (academic advisor)

  • A letter confirming supervision by a university lecturer in Germany (academic advisor).
  • Planned research work schedule

In the case of planning to participate in a structured doctoral research program:

  • An offer of admission to an academic program; this can be submitted later, before the start of funded research, if not already available at the time of application.
  • Proof of existing connections with the doctoral program coordinator in the form of copies of email exchanges.

In addition, all applicants must submit the following:

  • Certificates or diplomas containing final course grades: these may be submitted later, before the start of funded research, if not already available at the time of application.
  • Other supporting documents for your application (e.g., employment certificate, proof of training/internship, etc.)
  • Depending on the German language proficiency certificate (onDaF, TestDaF) or English language proficiency certificate (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or TEM) for the subject.
