Final round of the communication initiative competition on the right to access information
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh - Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU delivered the opening speech of the festival.
Attending the event were Ms. Nguyen Phuong Anh, Coordinator of the Fund for Local Initiatives; MSc. Ngo Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Director of the Center for Education Support and Capacity Building for Women CEPEW; Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Quang Minh, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; Dr. Tran Bach Hieu, Secretary of the University Youth Union; Dr. Do Van Hung, Head of the Faculty of Library Information, and many students from many high schools and universities in Hanoi.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh shared: Information today has a special importance. Information is power, information is authority, if you know how to use information, know how to exploit information, then you can become a person with power that no one else has. And the right to know is also the right of each individual to master their own destiny, as well as master the school where teachers and students are joining hands and contributing.
On behalf of the school's leadership, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh expressed his gratitude to the Canadian Embassy, CEPEW Center and teachers and students of the Faculty of Library and Information, who have ignited the belief in a better future for themselves, as well as the school and the whole society. Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh pledged to always support and create the most favorable conditions for all teachers and students in the school to promote the spirit of initiative and creativity in the project.
As a student, what information do you usually look for in university? Have you ever had difficulty finding and accessing information in university? Are the difficulties we encounter when accessing information in university due to students being passive or for some other reason?... These are the questions raised for discussion in the discussion "Are students passive in accessing information?" which took place right after the opening ceremony.

As someone who has spent a lot of time researching the right to access information and actively participated in the process of drafting the law on access to information to submit to the National Assembly, taking a rights-based approach, Ms. Ngo Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Director of the Center for Education Support and Capacity Building for Women CEPEW, shared a lot of specific information about information and information access activities.
These contents were partly concretized, discussed and exchanged with specific evidence by Master Pham Huy Cuong, Deputy Head of the Department of Politics and Student Affairs. As one of the two units of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities that regularly works and contacts with students, Master Pham Huy Cuong gave practical evidence about the department's activities of contacting and providing information to students.

From the perspective of young people, Dang Trung Anh, Faculty of Management Science, also gave feedback on the necessity, needs and ways young people access information when sitting in university lecture halls.
The sharing of the guest speakers along with the interactive questions of the students participating in the program, the discussion provided a relatively comprehensive perspective on the process of accessing information in general and of university students in particular.
In addition to the discussion, young people can also visit and evaluate the booths of the teams participating in the contest "Media Initiatives on Access to Information for Young People". Listen to the presentations and vote for the projects they like.
In addition, the festival also organizes a game area associated with important principles in the right to access information, which helps young people learn and play effectively.
The right to access information is considered a prerequisite for the implementation of other human rights, to ensure transparency and accountability of the state. Access to information enables all citizens to make informed decisions such as promoting good governance and preventing corruption, protecting the legitimate rights and interests of citizens. The project to enhance understanding and promote youth participation in promoting the right to access information in Vietnam was implemented by the Center for Education Support and Capacity Building for Women (CEPEW) in collaboration with the Faculty of Library Information, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU from December 2015 to February 2016. Phase 1 includes the following activities: a workshop to share the progress of building the law on access to information in Vietnam. Two training courses on the right to access information for lecturers and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU. From the training courses, a core youth group was established, playing a leading role in implementing the project's activities in phase 2. Phase 2 of the project includes: two seminars on the right to access information at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities; building a model of providing information based on rights deployed at the Faculty of Library Information; a competition calling for communication ideas on the right to access information. Finally, the project ended with an information day event, displaying communication initiatives and a discussion on the right to access information, spreading the values of equality in information access to the community. |
