Summary of thesis results: Hanoi Citadel (1805-1897) was a product of the process of absorbing and applying French science, technology, and civilization – values that have been tested and affirmed by time and the practical experience of war. With its position as a political, economic, cultural, social, and military center with a long history, although no longer the capital, Hanoi Citadel was still built on a grand scale by the Nguyen dynasty, commensurate with its status as an administrative center – the northern citadel, a provincial capital. However, Hanoi Citadel failed to demonstrate its position and role and quickly failed in its first encounter with the French – the creators of the Vauban defensive architecture. Based on research, comparison, and analysis of documentary sources from Western sources and records, this thesis presents the construction process, scale, structure, and subsequent decline of Hanoi Citadel from 1805 to 1897. From the failure of Hanoi Citadel, the thesis draws some causes and lessons learned regarding the role of fortifications in military struggle; as well as the value and lessons of cultural transformation in Vietnam in the 18th and 19th centuries.
