Summary of thesis results: The thesis has generally studied the magical realism trend in Nguyen Binh Phuong's novels from the following aspects: practical and theoretical basis, methods of organizing the work, the system of characters, and the realistic issues conveyed through the system of imagery in the work. Chapter 1: Practical and theoretical basis of the thesis. The thesis focuses on summarizing the changes in Vietnamese novels after 1986, the emergence of the magical realism trend in world and Vietnamese literature, along with introducing the creative journey of Nguyen Binh Phuong - a writer with typical works in the magical realism trend and important contributions to this trend. Chapter 2: Magical Realism in the Organization of Nguyen Binh Phuong's Works. The magical realism in Nguyen Binh Phuong's novels creates a unique spatiotemporal architecture for each work through the intertwining and blending of the real and the surreal, thereby opening up multiple dimensions of reality exploration through spatiotemporal structures of the underworld and the mortal world, the unconscious and the conscious, and psychology and spirituality. In addition, magical realism influences the construction of the novel's structure to create "a multi-layered arrangement" (Pham Xuan Thach) through the creation of the work's structure. Nguyen Binh Phuong's novel structure has two prominent characteristics: its multi-linear nature and its disintegration. Chapter 3: Magical Realism in Character Development in Nguyen Binh Phuong's Novels. In Nguyen Binh Phuong's novels, magical realism influences the artistic aspects of character development with three basic forms: illusory characters, bizarre characters, and absent characters. This system of characters is both imbued with fantastical and mythical elements, yet also historically significant – specifically due to the work's context and the realistic messages conveyed behind the characters. In it, one finds the pressing issues of contemporary life, most notably three problems: alienation, violence, and loss of faith. With a clear awareness of using magical realism in his literary works, Nguyen Binh Phuong has made a significant contribution to the renewal of contemporary Vietnamese novels. Chapter 1: The fact and theoretical basis of the thesis. Our thesis concentrates on issues below: changes in Vietnamese after 1986, appearance of magic realism trend in literature in the world and in Vietnam, moreover, introduction of composing journey of Nguyen Binh Phuong whose works are typical for magic realism trend and have important contribution to this trend. Chapter 2: Writing style of magic realism in organization of Nguyen Binh Phuong's works. Writing style of magic realism in Nguyen Binh Phuong's novels made a unique kind of contruction of space and time in every novel from the undistinguished mixture between fact and magic. And then, the multiple fact discovery opened through contruction of space – time, yin – yang, unconsciousness – consciousness, psychology – spiritual... Besides, magic realism style affected to novels structure with “a multistage coordination” (Pham Xuan Thach) from the creation of novels structure. The structure of NguyenBinh Phuong's novel has two features, they are multithreading and decomposition. Chapter 3: Magic realism style in character construction in Nguyen Binh Phuong novels. In Nguyen Binh Phuong novels, magic realism style affects the art of character construction by three basic forms: magic character, unusual character and absent character. This character system brings both magical feature and particular historic feature, because of work context and realistic messages tranfered beside images. People find out bad problems in the contemporary life, first of all, alienation, violence and lost belief. Nguyen Binh Phuong was aware of using magic realism style in composing clearly. Thanks to this, he had a great contribution in innovation process of Vietnamese contemporary novel.
