Chapter 3: Forecast of trade and investment relations between Thailand and Vietnam, solutions to promote cooperation between the two countries.
Thailand and Vietnam have a long-standing relationship. The relationship between the two countries has gone through many ups and downs throughout history since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1976. This has created the foundation and favorable conditions for the development of trade and investment relations. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, especially after the US lifted its economic embargo against Vietnam (1994) and after Vietnam became a member of ASEAN in 1995, economic relations between Thailand and Vietnam improved significantly. From 1995 to the present, economic relations between Thailand and Vietnam, primarily in the areas of trade and investment, have continuously developed in a positive direction. Looking back over the past nearly 20 years (1995 - 2014), it can be said that trade and investment relations between the two countries have made quite solid progress.
Regarding trade relations, bilateral trade between Thailand and Vietnam has steadily increased, from approximately US$3 million in 1995 to US$1.179 billion in 2000. By 2013, trade between the two countries had reached US$10.451 billion, an increase of more than 20.3 times compared to 1995.
Regarding investment relations, Thailand began investing in the Vietnamese market in 1988, starting with 3 projects totaling US$2,424,000. However, the number of projects and the capital have increased over time. By 1995, Thailand had 138 investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of US$476 million. Cumulatively, up to 2013, Thailand's total registered investment capital in Vietnam reached US$6.468 billion, ranking 10th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam. Conversely, while Vietnamese investment in Thailand remains modest, it has helped Vietnamese investors accumulate the necessary experience and skills to enhance their competitiveness in the market economy.
Clearly, trade and investment relations between Thailand and Vietnam have achieved many successes and have progressed steadily since 1995. This relationship is positive, serving the practical interests of both countries and contributing to the further development of friendship between them.
11. Practical applications:
All the research findings of this thesis are immediately applicable in practice. These results will help Thailand and Vietnam build a more comprehensive database on international cooperation activities in the fields of trade and investment; provide systematic assessments of these activities; and enable the application of the practical solutions recommended in this thesis.
12. Future research directions:

However, the numbers of projects and capitals have been increasing more and more. Until 1995, Thailand had 138 investment projects in Vietnam with total capital of USD 476 million. If cumulatively until 2013, Thailand's total investment registration capital in Vietnam reached USD 6,468 billion, ranking the 10thposition among countries and territories which have invested into Vietnam. On the contrary, the investment of Vietnam into Thailand is modest, but it helps Vietnamese investors accumulate necessary experiences and skills to improve the competitive capacity in the market mechanism.
Clearly, the commercial and investment relationship between Thailand and Vietnam has reached many successes and has had more and more progress from 1995 until now.
