Chapter 3: Forecast of trade and investment relations between Thailand and Vietnam, solutions to promote cooperation between the two countries
Thailand and Vietnam are two countries with a long-standing relationship. The relationship between the two countries has gone through many ups and downs in history since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1976. This has created the premise and favorable conditions for the two countries to develop trade and investment relations. After the end of the Cold War in 1991, especially after the US lifted the economic embargo against Vietnam (1994) and after Vietnam became a member of the ASEAN Association in 1995, the economic relationship between Thailand and Vietnam has improved significantly. Since 1995, the economic relationship between Thailand and Vietnam, which is primarily expressed in the fields of trade and investment, has continuously developed in a positive direction. Looking back over the past 20 years (1995 - 2014), it can be said that trade and investment relations between the two countries have made quite steady progress.
Regarding trade relations, two-way trade turnover between Thailand and Vietnam has continuously increased, from only about 3 million USD in 1995, to 1.179 billion USD in 2000. By 2013, trade turnover between the two countries had reached 10.451 billion USD, an increase of more than 20.3 times compared to 1995.
Regarding investment relations, Thailand has invested in the Vietnamese market since 1988, starting with 3 projects with a total capital of 2,424,000 USD. However, the number of projects and capital have increased over time. By 1995, Thailand had 138 investment projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of 476 million USD. If calculated cumulatively until 2013, Thailand had a total registered investment capital of 6.468 billion USD, ranking 10th among countries and territories investing in Vietnam. On the contrary, although Vietnam's investment in Thailand is still modest, it also helps Vietnamese investors accumulate the necessary experience and skills to improve their competitiveness in the market mechanism.
Obviously, the trade and investment relations between Thailand and Vietnam have achieved many successes and have been increasingly developing since 1995. This relationship is positive, meeting the practical interests of the two countries, contributing to the growing friendship between the two countries.
11. Practical application:
All the research results of the thesis can be applied in practice right now. The results help Thailand and Vietnam build a database of more international cooperation activities in the field of trade and investment; make systematic assessments of these activities; and be able to apply the recommended solutions with practical application value of the thesis.
12. Further research directions:
The thesis has not studied much about the views of business investors of the two countries to promote trade and investment relations, as well as the policies that businessmen need support from the state. Therefore, there is a need for further studies that will be more in-depth on these contents.

Thailand and Vietnam are two countries who have a long-term relationship. The relationship between the two countries has experienced many ups and downs in the history of the relationship since the two countries established the diplomat in 1976. Then, the premise and favorable conditions for the commercial and investment relationship development of the two countries have been created. After the cold war ended in 1991, especially after US took down the economic embargo towards Vietnam (1994) and after Vietnam became a member of ASEAN association in 1995, the economic relationship between Thailand and Vietnam has been significantly improved. From 1995 until now, the economic relationship between Thailand – Vietnam, firstly in the field of commerce and investment, has had the continuous development steps towards the positive direction. Looking back at the stage of nearly 20 years (1995 – 2014), it is possible to say that the trade and investment relationship between the two countries has had fairly steady advances.
Regarding commercial relationship, the two-way wholesale turnover between Thailand and Vietnam has incessantly increased, from about USD 3 million to USD 1,179 billion in 2000. Until 2013, the commercial turnover between the two countries has reached the number of USD 10,451 billion, which means it has increased 20.3 times as much as in 1995.
Regarding investment relationship, Thailand has invested into Vietnamese market since 1988, firstly through 3 projects with total capital of USD 2,424,000. However, the numbers of projects and capitals have been increasing more and more. Until 1995, Thailand had 138 investment projects in Vietnam with total capital of USD 476 million. If cumulatively until 2013, Thailand's total investment registration capital in Vietnam reached USD 6,468 billion, ranking the 10thposition among countries and territories which have invested into Vietnam. On the contrary, the investment of Vietnam into Thailand is modest, but it helps Vietnamese investors accumulate necessary experiences and skills to improve the competitive capacity in the market mechanism.
Clearly, the commercial and investment relationship between Thailand and Vietnam has reached many successes and has had more and more progress from 1995 until now. This relationship is positive and satisfies the practical benefits of two countries, contributing into looking after the more and more developed friendship between two countries.
