The thesis consists of three chapters:  Chapter 1: Study on Vietnam's novels in the innovation period and Le Luu's contributions to genres of nonfiction; Chapter 2: studying the types of characters in the novel by Le Luu in the renovation period. The thesis presents four main types of characters: Tragic character, alienated character, twofold character, lonely and unhappy characters; Chapter 3: Finding out the art of building characters in the novels by Le Luu.

The thesis has brought a systematic vision on character types in the novels by Le Luu in the innovation period through studying, and finding out the world of characters and the art of building characters of the author.

The thesis has a deep analysis of the newness in Le Luu’s concept as well as in his novel art when characters are portrayed. 

Accordingly, the thesis confirms talents and contributions of the author to the national literature in general and Vietnam’s contemporary literature in particular.
