Family dysfunction is a relatively new topic being studied and explored in Vietnam. Currently, there are quite few research papers or essays on this subject. Family dysfunction manifests as symptoms of instability within the family, indicating that the problems are the responsibility of all members and are not adequately resolved, especially the role of the mother. The foundation of this approach is a system of family norms used as a measure to gauge different levels of family pathology.

Many schools of psychology around the world have addressed this topic, with psychoanalysis being the first to identify "incest" as a manifestation of family dysfunction. Later, psychologists developed this topic further, exploring various expressions such as imbalances in the family triangle—parent-child relationships—leading to mental distress.
