Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common form of anxiety disorder characterized by persistent, widespread, and scattered worries that are not focused on any particular event or circumstance in the surrounding environment or related to past events that are no longer relevant. These worries are variable but tend to be chronic. Excessive anxiety symptoms are always accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle tension, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and restlessness. Patients are unable to control these worries, leading to reduced work capacity, daily activities, and other functions.

Generalized anxiety disorder is a common mental disorder. A study in Vietnam showed that the incidence rate within one year ranges from 3% to 8%, the lifetime incidence rate ranges from 5% to 8% of the population, and generalized anxiety disorder accounts for up to 25% of people seeking medical attention for anxiety disorders (Bui Quang Huy, 2017).

Generalized anxiety disorder is often accompanied by symptoms of many other mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, panic disorder, substance addiction disorder, etc. Its high prevalence, coupled with the disruptions caused by anxiety disorders in general and generalized anxiety disorder in particular, makes it a significant burden on patients, their families, and society as a whole.

Psychological therapy for generalized anxiety disorder is based on understanding the formation, development mechanisms, and maintenance factors of generalized anxiety disorder; thereby, addressing the root causes of avoidance behaviors, distorted perceptions, and anxious emotions.

In this thesis, through psychological assessment, the student found that the client's disordered manifestations were typical and prominent according to the ICD-10 criteria for generalized anxiety disorder. In addition, the results of the EPI, DASS, and PSQI tests contributed to the survey and identification of prominent disorder issues and associated problems of anxiety disorder: common manifestations/symptoms of depression, accompanying stress, but still based on a dominant anxiety background; unstable introverted neurotic phenotype; and insomnia. Through clinical interviews, the student also grasped noteworthy issues regarding the genetic factors of anxious personality, psychological trauma, and the influence of the environment on the formation, onset, and maintenance of anxiety manifestations in the client.

This thesis applied a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach focusing on relaxation exercises, changing false beliefs, activating behaviors to confront and overcome anxiety, along with the flexible application of appropriate techniques from other approaches such as psychoanalysis and humanism. Following the intervention, the client's generalized anxiety disorder was successfully resolved.

11. Practical applications:

Based on the results obtained from theoretical research and practical application of a clinical case, this thesis presents an overview of a clinical case involving generalized anxiety disorder and the psychological intervention process for a client with generalized anxiety disorder.

A thorough psychological assessment painted a vivid picture of the client's problems. Focused psychological intervention using cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, combined with psychoanalytic and humanistic approaches, helped to comprehensively address the client's issues.

This is a concise case study that illustrates many aspects of psychotherapeutic approaches while also reflecting on several current youth health issues.

Finally, the intervention process and results of this thesis contribute to affirming the relevance and applicability of psychological intervention for psychoneurotic disorders in general and generalized anxiety disorder in particular.
