First, this thesis provides an overview of Nguyen Tuan's creative journey and artistic views before the Revolution. Through this, the author identifies the main themes in Nguyen Tuan's works and the artistic concepts that influenced his pre-Revolutionary works, including the theme of writing about the past, primarily focused on in the short story collection "Echoes of a Bygone Era".

Next, the thesis delves into the major inspirations in Nguyen Tuan's writings about the past before the Revolution: the idealization of past life, the praise of the refined pleasures of the past, and the elegant and sophisticated lifestyle and behavior of the people. In addition, the author explores the typical character types in Nguyen Tuan's works on the theme of the past.

Finally, the thesis clarifies Nguyen Tuan's artistic characteristics regarding artistic time and space; narrative situations; language and tone; structure; and the artistic techniques of contrast and opposition.
