Information about the thesis "Initial Survey of the Phenomenon of Focusing on the Subject-Predicate Structure of Vietnamese Sentences" by graduate student Dao Thi Minh Ngoc, majoring in Linguistics.1. Student's Full Name: Dao Thi Minh Ngoc 2. Gender: Female 3. Date of Birth: November 13, 1985 4. Place of Birth: Hai Phong 5. Decision No. 2551/QD-XHNV-KH&SDH dated November 2, 2007, of the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, recognizing the student. 6. Changes during the training process: None 7. Thesis Title: A Preliminary Survey of the Focusing Phenomenon of Subject-Predicate Structure in Vietnamese Sentences 8. Major: Linguistics. Code: 60 22 01 9. Scientific Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Con. 10. Summary of Thesis Results: This thesis studies the focusing phenomenon of subject-predicate structure in Vietnamese sentences. This concept has been mentioned by many linguists in their research works. This is a phenomenon within the realm of pragmatics, a deliberate activity by the speaker using various linguistic means to highlight important and noteworthy information in a text, thereby guiding the listener to correctly perceive the role of that supposedly important information, focusing their attention on it appropriately and processing it accurately. The thesis consists of three chapters: Introduction, Content, and Conclusion. Chapter 1: Research Situation and Theoretical Basis. We present the views of various authors on the information structure of Vietnamese in general and the phenomenon of information focus in particular. We introduce basic concepts such as: information focus, information basis, and the phenomenon of information focus to serve as the basis for research in the following chapters. Chapter 2: Methods of Focusing the Subject-Predicate Structure of Vietnamese Sentences. The basis for identifying information focus is context, presupposition, and the possibility of omitting the basic information in the sentence. Through a survey of 20 works, we analyzed and described common types of focus: affirmative focus, interrogative focus, and contrasting focus. Because Vietnamese is a monosyllabic language, function words and word order play a crucial role in marking the information focus in a sentence. We surveyed three main forms of word order: pre-inversion, post-inversion, and a variant: the passive voice. Chapter 3: The Scope of Focusing the Subject-Predicate Structure of Vietnamese Sentences Based on the position of the focus, we can divide the information structure of Vietnamese sentences into three different types: information structure with the predicate as the focus; information structure with the argument as the focus; and information structure with the sentence as the focus. This division is essential for examining the information content of Vietnamese sentences. It demonstrates the close relationship between information structure and the subject-predicate structure of Vietnamese sentences. In the conclusion, we summarize the results of the survey conducted throughout the thesis. Finally, there is the appendix and references. The appendix contains only selected materials from the 20 works surveyed. 11. Practical applications 12. Future research directions 13. INFORMATION ON MASTER'S THESIS

1. Full name : Dao Thi Minh Ngoc 2. Sex: Female 3. Date of birth: 13/11/1985 4. Place of birth: Hai Phong 5. Admission decision number: 2551QD-XHNV-KH&SĐH, Dated: November 2nd, 2007 6. Changes in academic process: None 7. Official thesis title: Initial investigations to focalization on subject-predicate structure in Vietnamese sentences 8. Major: Linguistics 9. Code: 60 22 01 10. Supervisor: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Con 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: This master's thesis aims at focalization of subject- predicate structure of Vietnamese sentences. This concept has been mentioned in works of linguists. It belongs to pragmatic area – an activity contains the purpose of speaker and uses different ways of language in order to highlight important and notable information in texts. Thanks to this, listeners can be aware of the role of that important information and focus on it and use it correctly The thesis consists of 3 chapters: Chapter 1: Theories relating to the thesis We have mentioned opinions of researchers about information structure in VietNamese in general and information focalization in particular. We have mentioned basic concepts such as focal information, background information, focalization information . This would be the premise for next chapters. Chapter 2: Ways of marking focalization information in subject- predicate structure in Vietnamese sentences The basic to identify information is the context, presupposition and the capability of suppressing background information in the sentences. Over 20 works, we have analyzed and described popular types of focalization like declarative focus, interrogative focus and constrasting focus. Fomal words and word order play an important role in marking focal information in sentences. We have evaluated 3 main types of word order such as preposing, postposing and passive voice. Chapter 3: Position of focalization on subject- predicate structure in Vietnamese sentences Based on distribution of focus, we can divide information structure os Vietnamese sentences into 3 different types: information structure with the focus of predicate, argument and information structure with the focus of sentences. This division is considered necessary for researching the information content of Vietnamese sentences, from which we can realize the close relation between information and subject- predicate structure in Vietnamese sentences. In conclusion, We conclude all the results in the thesis. References and appendix which contains documents over 20 works will be the last parts. 12. Practical applicability, if any: None 13. Further research directions, if any: None 14. Thesis-related publications: None
