Student's Full Name: Tran Hoang Huong 2. Gender: Female 3. Date of Birth: November 6, 1986 4. Place of Birth: Nam Dinh City 5. Code: 602201 9. Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hiep, Vice Dean of the Department of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. 10. Summary of the thesis results: - Theoretically: This thesis follows the direction of functional grammar – one of the preferred schools of grammar, focusing on language in its functional activity, and currently one of the central grammatical trends in world linguistics. The results of the thesis will contribute to strengthening the correctness and explanatory and descriptive capacity of this school of grammar. By applying modern grammatical theory to examine specific examples in the communicative activity of language, the thesis will also contribute to strengthening grammatical theory or discovering new and different features in the rules of speech operation compared to the rules of language operation. Thus, this is the first step, the beginning of our future research on speech grammar. - Practically: The study of modal modifiers is not a new point in Vietnamese linguistics. Linguists have referred to this element by various names such as: Modal Idioms, Modal Topics, Modal Modifiers… However, the novelty of this thesis lies in its focus on clarifying this element across three dimensions: structure, semantics, and pragmatics. During the survey and analysis, we also observed several cases sharing the same modal content but differing in degree. Clarifying these differences contributes to a clearer understanding of the functioning of this element in sentences and communication. Simultaneously, it provides researchers with a more comprehensive view of this element as a sentence component. 11. Practical Applications: The research results of this thesis will also be helpful in compiling grammar textbooks for Vietnamese and foreign learners from a communicative perspective. 12. Published works related to the thesis: Graduation thesis: A preliminary survey of sentences with "tense" and "is" at the beginning in 3 aspects: Semantics and Pragmatics, published in July 2008.

Code: 602201 10. Supervisors: Prof. Dr Nguyen Van Hiep- Deputy head of linguistic department 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: - Theoritical achivements : This thesis embraces Fuctional Grammar – one of the grammar preferential schools regarding language in its functions - which is one of the central grammatically trends of the world's modern linguistics. The thesis's result is aimed at consolidating the rightness and the ability to explain and to describe of this trend. By applying modern grammar theories to go over specific cases in communication, the thesis contributes to consolidate grammar theory or find out new differences between fucntional rules of speech and language. This is our first steps of researching grammar of speech afterwards. - Practical Achivements : Stative predicate research is not fresh news in Vietnamese linguistics. The experts call this object by various terms like: stative locution, or stative adverbial locution. However, this thesis is the first one to study the component in all three aspects: structure, semantics and function. During the process of investigation and analysis we have found out some situations with the same stative meaning at different levels. The explanation of this variety also contributes to further clarify functional rules of this component in phrase and communication. This also helps the researchers to have a more comprehensive view of the stative predicate as component of a phrase. 12. Practical applicability: The thesis's results are useful for compiling Vietnamese grammar textbook for communication. 13. Thesis-related publications: Initial investigation of phrases starting with “ thi”, “la” in 3 aspects : syntactics, semantical and functional, “ released July 2008
