Summary of the thesis results: Based on the concept of defamiliarization in literature and the specific aspects of its manifestation in literary works, this thesis delves into the study of defamiliarization in Anton Chekhov's stories, particularly through the stories about children and women. These are two subjects with a highly subjective, emotionally-driven, and distinctive perspective on life. Defamiliarization (Russian: ostranenie, English: defamiliarization) is understood in both content and form. The art of defamiliarization is expressed through all the main aspects of a literary work. Defamiliarization in artistic prose is often created by the narrator's point of view not coinciding with the author's. In A. Chekhov's works, defamiliarization is manifested at all levels of the text: the way reality is perceived (described, identified, etc.), the system of spatiotemporal coordinates is vague, space is familiar and stagnant, time is objective and primarily emotional time, the description of characters in their daily lives awakens their awareness of their monotonous and mundane existence, the language (discourse) is objective, calm, gentle yet profound – all stemming from the character's point of view, not the omniscient author's. Through the study of defamiliarization in A. Chekhov's short stories, especially those about children and women, this thesis affirms the artistic innovations in his short story. His works have contributed to the renewal of prose thinking as well as expanding the possibilities of the short story genre. 11. Practical applications: Contributes to guiding the reading of A. Chekhov's works and suggests research directions on the art of defamiliarization in A. Chekhov's prose and plays, as well as research on defamiliarization in works of various genres by other talented writers. 12. Future research directions: Defamiliarization in A. Chekhov's prose; Defamiliarization in the works of contemporary authors; Comparison of different defamiliarization techniques by A. Chekhov and one (or several) contemporary authors. 13. Published works related to the thesis: None
