In August 2018, the film Crazy Rich Asians, produced and released by Warner Bros., premiered in North America and immediately became a cinematic phenomenon. As a commercially successful film, its box office success and the public attention it garnered demonstrated that it met the tastes of the American audience. In other words, the portrayals of Asians in Crazy Rich Asians resonated with the American public's expectations regarding the image of Asians. Therefore, the portrayals in Crazy Rich Asians can be considered widely accepted representations of Asians in the 21st century. More notably, these portrayals both continue a long-standing system of stereotypes and introduce innovative departures. The continuous and complex evolution of stereotypes about Asians in Hollywood cinema is the reason we chose to research this topic. By studying the case of the film Crazy Rich Asians, we examine stereotypes about the Chinese diaspora from a constructivist perspective; simultaneously, we place these stereotypes within the context of continuity and innovation in the portrayal of Asians in Hollywood cinema. Through this, we aim to trace and dissect these stereotypes, as well as decipher the portrayals of Chinese people in the film. Finally, we seek to determine the symbolic value of these stereotypes in Crazy Rich Asians and the film's contribution to the formation of a new image of Asians in American cinema.

In August 2018, the film Crazy Rich Asians was produced and released by Warner Bros. studio in North America and immediately became a widescreen phenomenon. As a commercial movie, Crazy Rich Asians' box office success as well and public's attention shows that Crazy Rich Asians meets the tastes of the American mass audience. In other words, stereotypes about Asians in Crazy Rich Asians meet with American public's expectations of contemporary Asians. Therefore, the stereotypes in Crazy Rich Asians can be considered as widely accepted expressions of Asians in the 21 st century. More remarkable is that the stereotypes in Crazy Rich Asians follow the long-standing pattern as well as moving to the new ones. The continuous and complex movement in constructing Asian stereotypes in Hollywood cinema is the reason for us to choose this research. By studying the case of Crazy Rich Asians, we look at stereotypes about oversea Chinese in terms of tectonic approach; at the same time, put these stereotypes continuously and innovation in representation of Asians in Hollywood cinema. Thereby, we want to trace and extract the stereotypes, as well as decode the Chinese representation in the film. And finally, we want to position the meaning of the stereotype in Crazy Rich Asians and the film's contribution in the process of forming a new representation of Asians in American cinema.
