Recognizing the similarities in genre, conceptions of war, and human nature during wartime, we decided to explore the poetics of Bao Ninh's novel *The Sorrow of War* through a comparison with two foreign novels: *All Quiet on the Western Front* by Erich Maria Remarque and *Smoke and Fire* by Henri Basbusse. This thesis delves into a comparative study of the characters, artistic space and time, plot organization, language, and tone of the work. The comparative process has led us to realize that *The Sorrow of War* represents a novelistic poetics. Compared to the two novels recognized worldwide as classics of war—*All Quiet on the Western Front* and *Smoke and Fire*—*The Sorrow of War* has captured and expressed certain aspects of war. This truly represents the author's effort to integrate into the mainstream of world literature. 3. The theme of war remains broad and constantly evolving. Bao Ninh confided that he was still not satisfied with what he had written in his work. Therefore, more works like "The Sorrow of War" are needed to further clarify the glorious and tragic war of the nation. The mysteries of life and other individual destinies await writers.
