Scientific supervisor: Prof. Dr. Le Thi Quy. Director of the Center for Gender and Development. University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. 10. Summary of thesis results: Research exploring gender issues in free migration. The results show that in free migration, there has been a greater participation of women, with the belief that whoever can earn money and find work quickly will go to earn money. The reasons for migration of women and men also differ, but they both meet at the same purpose and motivation: poverty and the desire to escape poverty. There are gender differences in decisions to leave home to work far away, with men being more proactive and making their own decisions about migration. They have more resources. In the journey of migrants, the role of social networks is very important; most people who come to Hanoi to work do so because they have relatives living there who help them. The study also found that, besides social connections and limited assistance from local authorities, free migrants receive almost no help from the government. They even suffer disadvantages from restrictive policies of urban authorities and discrimination from urban residents. However, the percentage of migrant workers overcoming difficulties and staying in Hanoi is increasing. Given this reality, the Party and Government need appropriate rural development policies to retain farmers leaving agriculture and to alleviate the pressure on urban areas from these free migration flows. 11. Practical application: The study has shown differences between women and men in the causes and decisions of migration, as well as in job opportunities. such as access to social services... during free migration. This information will serve as a basis for establishing migration policies to maximize the benefits of this migration flow and minimize the negative consequences it causes. 12. Supervisor: Prof., PhD. Le Thi Quy. Director of The Research Center for Gender and Development, Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanity. 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: This research aims to study the gender issues in informal migration. The results show that, the female has more participated in inormal migration because of an opinion that the one can earn money and quickly find job will be the one who go to earn money. The reason of informal migration is different in male and female but from the same goal and motivation, poverty and want to be out of poverty. There is a difference in terms of gender in deciding on leaving their native land to work in a far place. Male is active and self-decisive in his migration than female. For migrators, the social network is very important for them. Almost migrators worked in Hanoi have relatives that lived in Hanoi and helped them a lot. The results also show that, accepting the social network and a little bit support from the local authority, the migrators mostly do not have any support from the government, they even get troubles with forbidance policies from cities authority and discrimination of citizens. Dispite of challenges, the rate of migrators overcoming the challenges and still living in Hanoi is still more and more. Face to this fact, the government needs to develop a suitable rural development policy to keep the farmers stay with their farms and reduce informal presure for cities. 12. Practical applicability, if any: The research has shown the differences between male and female in reasons and decisions on migration, chances in approaching jobs and social services, etc. during the process of informal migration. Those results will be a foundation to develop migration policies which will maximize the benefits as well as minimize the corollary of that migration flow. 13. Further research directions, if any: N/A. 14. Thesis-related publications: - The adaptation of the informal rural migrants to cities and surroundings. A case study in Hanoi.
