Decision No. 1535/2009/QD-XHNV-KH&SDH dated October 16, 2009, of the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, recognizing the student. 6. Changes in the training process: None 7. Thesis title: A Survey of the Presentation of Phonetics in Vietnamese Language Textbooks in China during the period 2000-2010 8. Specialization: Linguistics 9. Code: 60.22.01 10. Scientific supervisor: Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi 11. Summary of thesis results: The purpose of this thesis is to survey the presentation of phonetics in eight Vietnamese language textbooks published in China during the period 2000-2010. The thesis also presents two phonetic concepts (phonological concept and the concept of the Vietnamese Quốc ngữ script) currently in circulation in Vietnam as a theoretical basis for comparison. After summarizing the presentation of phonetics in eight textbooks, this thesis assesses the quality of phonetic knowledge in these textbooks based on the phonetic characteristics of the Vietnamese language, focusing on tones, initial consonants, vowels, and phonetic elements of vowels such as vowels, semi-vowels, and final consonants. Based on the comparative analysis, none of the eight textbooks completely adhere to either of the two existing conceptions of Vietnamese phonetics. Some textbooks partially resemble the phonological conception, while others resemble the conception of the Vietnamese alphabet. Some textbooks resemble the conception of the Vietnamese alphabet, but others do not conform to either of the two existing conceptions of Vietnamese phonetics. In the four textbooks "Book 2," "Book 4," "Book 6," and "Book 7," the single vowel section follows the Vietnamese alphabet concept (9 single vowels, including two long and short opposing vowels), but the diphthongs and final consonants follow the phonological concept. In the four textbooks "Book 1," "Book 3," "Book 5," and "Book 8," the single vowel section follows the Vietnamese alphabet concept (9 single vowels, including two long and short opposing single vowels), while the remaining sections do not follow either concept (there are more than 20 diphthongs, the concept of triplets, but no concept of semi-vowels and glides), and the number of final consonants also does not follow either concept. In the eight textbooks, the list of initial consonants does not follow either concept, the number of initial consonants is not consistent and does not conform to either of the two concepts of Vietnamese phonetics. Therefore, if we take one of the two currently circulating Vietnamese phonetic concepts as the standard, none of the Vietnamese language textbooks in China are entirely accurate. Therefore, I believe that in the process of compiling Vietnamese language textbooks, one of the two Vietnamese phonetic concepts should be chosen as the theoretical basis, avoiding a disconnect from the phonetic characteristics of Vietnamese and confusing the two concepts of "sound" and "writing." Thus, the research results of this thesis will contribute to the compilation of Vietnamese language textbooks in China and assist Vietnamese language teachers, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese language learners in China. 12. Practical application: This thesis will contribute to the compilation of Vietnamese language textbooks in China and assist Vietnamese language teachers, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese language learners in China. 13. Future research directions: This thesis is a pioneering research work on Vietnamese phonetics as taught in China. We hope to continue our in-depth research and achieve further results in this research direction, especially regarding the phonetics in the teaching of Vietnamese in China. 14. Published works related to the thesis: None.

Official thesis title: Studying the representation of phonetics in Vietnamese textbooks in China period 2000-2010 8. Major: Linguistics 9. Code: 60.22.01 10. Supervisor: Prof.Dr. Tran Tri Doi 11. Summary of the findings of the thesis: Objective of the thesis is to study the situation of phonetic representation in 8 Vietnamese textbooks published in China period 2000-2010. The thesis also represents two phonetic conceptions (phonemic conception and conception of Vietnamese scripts) exists in Vietnam to be a basis for the comparison. After summarizing the representation of phonetics in 8 Vietnamese textbooks, the thesis bases on characteristics of Vietnamese phonetics to evaluate the quality of phonetic knowledge in the textbooks in terms of tone, initial consonants, syllables and phonetic elements of syllables such as vowels, semi-vowels, final consonants. According to comparison and analysis, amongst the 8 textbooks, none is completely in one of the two exists conceptions of Vietnamese phonetics. Some textbooks are partly similar to the conception of phonology but another part is similar to the conception of Vietnamese scripts. Some textbooks are similar to the conception of Vietnamese scripts but another part does not similar to exist two conceptions of Vietnamese scripts. In 4 textbooks “textbook number 2”, “textbook number 4”, “textbook number 6”, and “textbook number 7”, single vowel is in the conception of Vietnamese scripts (9 single vowels of which 2 vowels are long and short contradiction but dipthongs and final vowels are in the phonemic conception). In 4 textbooks “textbook number 1”, “textbook number 3”, “textbook number 5”, and “textbook number 8”, single vowel is in the conception of Vietnamese scripts (9 single vowels of which 2 are long single opposite vowels), other parts do not follow the two conceptions (more than 20 dipthongs, with conception of tripthong, no conception of semi-vowel and middle vowel) and the number of final consonants also does not follow one of the two conceptions. Amongst the 8 textbooks, initial consonants do not follow the two conceptions, the number of initial consonants is not similar and also not similar to one of the two conceptions of Vietnamese phonetics. Therefore, if taking one of two Vietnamese phonetic conceptions which are circulated as the standard, in the Vietnamese teaching materials in China, currently, no textbook is correct. In my opinion, thus, we should use one of two Vietnamese phonetic conceptions as theoretical basis during the compilation process of Vietnamese textbooks, avoid being “strange” to Vietnamese phonetic special features and confused to two notions “syllable” and “writing”. As such, the research result of the thesis will make contribution for compiling the Vietnamese teaching materials in China, supporting the tutors teach Vietnamese and Vietnam learners in China. 12. Practical applicability: The thesis will contribute to compile the Vietnamese teaching materials in China, support the tutors teach Vietnamese, and create convenient conditions for Vietnamese learners in China. 13. Further research directions: The thesis is the initial research work pertaining to the Vietnamese phonetics taught in China. We desire to study further and obtain the research-oriented achievements, especially the phonetic matters during the Vietnamese teaching procedure in China. 14. Thesis – related publications: None
