Young lecturers take on the challenge of Bolero music.

Tuesday - January 16, 2018 14:51
The third season of the "Bolero Idol 2018" program, broadcast on VTV 3, began its preliminary rounds in late 2017 and has now selected contestants for the "Elite" round. This year, one of the contestants who has garnered positive media attention and high praise from the coaches is young lecturer Nguyen Duy Cuong from the Philosophy Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. During the filming days in Ho Chi Minh City, Duy Cuong still granted the university's website a quick interview.

- Hello Duy Cuong, first, could you introduce yourself briefly and tell us how you became involved with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities?

My name is Nguyen Duy Cuong, and I was born in Nghe An. Ever since I was a high school student, I dreamed of becoming a student at the prestigious University of Social Sciences and Humanities. After passing the university entrance exam, I became a student in the K54 cohort of the Philosophy Department.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been guided and taught by dedicated teachers and scientists such as Professor Do Van Khang, Professor Nguyen Anh Tuan, Ms. Do Thi Minh Thao, Ms. Nguyen Thuy Van, Professor Giang, Ms. Hanh, and others during my studies at the university. With the knowledge and skills I gained at the university, immediately after graduating, I applied to become a doctoral student at the Academy of Social Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) and successfully defended my doctoral thesis in May 2017 under the supervision of Professor Nguyen Van Huyen and Dr. Luong Thu Hien.

Becoming a lecturer at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is truly a great joy and happiness for me because it provides many favorable conditions for me to conduct research with a focus on interdisciplinary scientific development - a new and pioneering direction in social science research today.

On the other hand, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is not only the most prestigious training institution in the country for social sciences, but it also has many cultural and social activities, especially arts and culture activities that are very strongly developed, allowing young people to freely express their abilities and passions. And let me tell you a secret, when I was a student, I was also very enthusiastic about participating in school activities and was a member of the Sol Club (laughs).

- Older brotherHow did you get to participate in the "Bolero Idol 2018" competition?

Currently, I am participating in the third season of the Bolero Idol competition. As I've shared with some newspapers, my involvement in this year's competition was a matter of fate. Although I was very interested in and regularly followed the previous two seasons, I couldn't find the time to participate due to focusing on my studies and teaching, even though I really wanted to. Fortunately, right after I defended my doctoral thesis, I saw the announcement for contestants for the third season of Bolero Idol from the Arts and Culture Department of Vietnam Television, and I decided to register. And luckily, I passed the three extremely intense casting rounds and made it to the "Elite" round. We just had the first filming session of the "Elite" round in Ho Chi Minh City on January 8th and 9th.

Anyone who has ever listened to and enjoyed Bolero music will know the three names on this year's coaching panel: Ngoc Son, Nhu Quynh, and Quang Le. These are all highly skilled musicians with years of experience performing Bolero songs both domestically and internationally.

Honestly, I'm just an outsider; this is my first time participating in a singing competition and also my first time standing on such a large, professional stage. My initial feeling was one of overwhelming anxiety, but through training and guidance from the organizers, my nervousness gradually lessened. I hope to deliver the best performances for this year's Bolero Idol competition.

He is considered a potential contestant in this year's competition. He shared that he will present the image of a young intellectual from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, who is both professionally competent and talented, and confident in social activities.

From a young age, I've loved music, especially Bolero. I guess it's because I was born into a family with a tradition of loving music. My parents both sing very well (laughs) and often play Bolero songs every day, so Bolero has seeped into my soul, becoming a close friend. And it's probably also because I was born into extremely difficult circumstances: my father was in a traffic accident when I was in first grade, and from a young age, I had to help my mother take care of him in the hospital for five long years. It was a very difficult childhood, so perhaps I've poured my feelings and emotions into those sweet, deep, and loving Bolero songs.

Bolero music has sparked much debate, especially given its recent surge in popularity at Vietnamese music events. Some argue that "people's fascination with Bolero is a step backward for music." However, we can see that Bolero is a cultural product. Therefore, we need cultural equality. We shouldn't talk about which culture is superior or inferior, as long as it serves people's lives well. And of course, all art aims for beauty, and all beauty serves life. As the philosopher and aesthetician Kant said:"Taste (preference) is undeniable."Some people like painting and literature, others like film and music. Similarly, some people like pop ballads, others rock, folk music, classical music, and of course, there will be those who like Bolero. Our challenge is to discover the values, and especially the aesthetic values, of Bolero works.

Bolero music was introduced to Vietnam in the 1960s, particularly in the South. Although its rhythm and tempo were imported, it was adapted and integrated with Southern Vietnamese folk songs, making it very relatable to the Vietnamese people. During that time, many composers wrote famous Bolero songs such as...Smash the guitar to please you, and give you a grass ring....Those songs were created so long ago, yet they are still loved by everyone. From joyous occasions to sorrowful ones, from the wealthy to the common people, they still sing and love them because they are so relatable, allowing people to express their feelings through them.

- What advantages did you have participating in this program?lazyvng cincubatea brother when participating in theemeraldprogram nay?

My greatest advantage was the support and encouragement from Professor Pham Quang Minh - the Rector of the University, Associate Professor Nguyen Anh Tuan - Head of the Philosophy Department, and many other teachers, colleagues, and students, which enabled me to do my best in the competition.

Honestly, when I decided to participate in this program, some people were skeptical because they thought, "How can someone who teaches and researches such a dry subject sing Bolero?" Therefore, I want to affirm that lecturers in general, and Philosophy lecturers in particular, also have artistic souls and they also want to pursue their passions when given the opportunity. And I hope that when the program airs, I will receive the support and acceptance of everyone.

By participating in the "Bolero Idol 2018" program, I wanted to build an image of young lecturers from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi: young people who not only excel in teaching and research but also possess capabilities in many fields, especially in the arts and culture. Life is only lived once, so live life to the fullest for your passion so that you have no regrets later.
