Domestic violence against women is a reality that still occurs in many families in the suburban areas of Hanoi today. This is also a problem of the community and society. Research shows that, among the types of violence that women have to endure from their husbands, mental violence is the most common (54% of women said they had suffered mental violence in their lifetime and 25% said they had suffered mental violence in the past 12 months.

Domestic violence occurs in a cycle. Whether it is physical, mental, sexual or economic violence, it begins with a tense disagreement between the husband and wife, the violence occurs, then the husband shows remorse and tries to regain the wife's trust and the couple returns to normal. The violent acts are often forgiven by the wife but the problem that caused the violence is not completely resolved and after a while, the cycle starts again and the violence occurs again.

Domestic violence is a complex problem that is not caused by a single cause but by a combination of many different risk factors. Risk factors for domestic violence can be analyzed at different levels: individual level, family level, community level, and social level, in which the main cause is gender inequality. It is the profound inequality in gender relations and the ideology of male superiority over female that is the deep and pervasive cause of domestic violence.

Domestic violence leaves many serious consequences for families and society. Therefore, eliminating domestic violence is not only the responsibility of one person but requires the coordination of all levels, sectors, socio-political organizations and the nation in preventing and combating domestic violence. Only when the work of preventing and combating violence is effectively implemented, then the family will be considered a peaceful and happy place for family members and we can achieve the goal of building a prosperous, happy, equal and sustainable family.

11. Practical applicability: Domestic violence is an urgent issue today. The research results will contribute to providing a clearer picture of the problem of domestic violence. This will serve as a basis for social organizations with similar interests to work together to prevent and combat this phenomenon.
