The thesis presents an overview of the international and regional context, as well as the internal situation from the US and China sides.Myanmar affects US policy towards Myanmar. On that basis, the thesis deeply studies and emphasizes US policy towards Myanmar through the stages from after the Cold War until 2013. At the same time, it evaluates the nature of that policy, as well as the impacts it brings to the US itself, Myanmar, China and other subjects. Thereby, it identifies the strategic benefits that both the US and Myanmar gain when the US changes its policy towards Myanmar.

The thesis states international and regional context, as well as domestic situation in Myanmar and the United States that impact on US policy toward Myanmar.Given that situation, the thesis further investigated and emphasized the US policy toward Myanmarfrom the Cold Warto 2013. Meanwhile, the thesis assesses the nature of that policy, as well as its impacts on the US and Myanmar, and China and other factors. Thereby identifying strategiic benefits of the US and Myanmar by US changes its policy towards Myanmar.
