The academy has requested an extension of the postgraduate study period.
Decision No. 3542/QD-XHNV dated November 28, 2022, of the Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
Duration: from December 25, 2022 to June 24, 2023
7. Thesis title: “Intervention in a case of symptomatic depression using acceptance and commitment therapy”
8. Specialization: Clinical Psychology; Code: 8310401.02
9. Scientific supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hang
I work at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
10. Summary of the thesis results:
Firstly, the student has built a theoretical foundation to clarify the concepts of depressive disorder (DD) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Simultaneously, the student systematizes research on the current status of adults with DD, and the application of ACT in treating adults with DD worldwide and in Vietnam in recent years. In addition, the student presents basic information about ACT – a therapy not yet widely applied in Vietnam, including: its origins, therapeutic perspectives, perspectives on the pathways leading to DD, and treatment methods.
Secondly, the study involved intervening in a case of adult with RLTC using ACT. After 10 therapy sessions, the client's RLTC symptoms regressed, and psychological flexibility increased. This progress was demonstrated through quantitative assessments (Beck Depression Scale, AAQ-II Acceptance Scale, FFMQ-V Mindfulness Scale) and qualitative assessments (DSM-V, 6 core processes of ACT), conducted before and after therapy. The client responded well to the ACT techniques/exercises/metaphors during the intervention and easily applied them to self-therapy afterward. These results reinforce the view that ACT is effective in treating RLTC in adults.
11. Practical applications:
This thesis provides insight into the effectiveness of ACT in intervening in a case study of a Vietnamese adult with RLTC, thereby laying the groundwork for expanding the application of this therapy to RLTC interventions in Vietnam. In the recommendations section, the thesis presents the advantages and disadvantages of applying this therapy in the Vietnamese cultural context, suggesting directions for further research.
12. Future research directions:
HV plans to continue applying ACT in interventions for clients with RLTC to further evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of this therapy when applied to the Vietnamese cultural context. From there, HV will propose solutions to overcome the disadvantages, such as creating new techniques/exercises/metaphors based on the foundational theory of ACT.
HV plans to apply ACT to interventions in adult cases of anxiety disorders to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy for this disorder.

10. Summary of the findings of the thesis:
Firstly, I built a theoretical basis to clarify the concept of depressive disorder the concept of acceptance and commitment therapy). Simultaneously, I systematized studies on the status of adults with depressive disorder, then applied acceptance and commitment to therapy for adults with depressive disorder in the world and in Vietnam in recent years. In addition, I present basic information about acceptance and commitment - a therapy that has not been widely applied in Vietnam, including: its origin, therapeutic perspectives, viewpoints on the path to depressive disorder and treatment methods.
Second, I performed an intervention in an adult case with depressive disorder by using acceptance and commitment. After 10 sessions of therapy, the client's depressive disorder symptoms subsided, and psychological flexibility increased. This progression was demonstrated through quantitative (Beck depression scale, AAQ-II acceptance scale, FFMQ-V mindfulness scale) and qualitative (DSM-V, 6 core acceptance and commitment processes), performed before and after therapy. The client responded well to the acceptance and commitment techniques/exercises/metaphors during the process of intervention and easily applied to self-therapy after the intervention. The above results reinforce the conclusion that acceptance and commitment is effective in the treatment of depressive disorder in adults.
11. Practical applicability, if any:
The thesis has provided a perspective on the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment for intervention in a case of Vietnamese adults with depressive disorder, thereby serving as a premise to expand the application of this therapy to intervention in Vietnam. In the recommendations section, I presented the advantages and disadvantages of applying this therapy in the Vietnamese cultural context as suggestions for further research.
12. Further research directions, if any:
I plan to continue to apply acceptance and commitment in interventions for clients with depressive disorder to better assess the advantages and disadvantages of this therapy when applying to the Vietnamese cultural context. From there, I will propose solutions to overcome weaknesses such as creating new techniques/exercises/metaphors based on the foundational theory of acceptance and commitment.
I intend to apply acceptance and commitment to the intervention of adults with anxiety disorders to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy with this disorder.
