Scientific Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Nguyen Duc Ton – Institute of Linguistics. 11. Summary of Thesis Results: This thesis studies the semantic characteristics of words denoting Vietnamese wedding customs in comparison with English. Wedding customs exist among all ethnic groups worldwide. However, these customs differ between ethnic groups, and not everyone fully understands their meanings. Therefore, studying the terminology used to describe wedding customs in Vietnam and England will help to understand some of the distinctive cultural features of these two native-speaking communities. This thesis contributes to opening up new approaches to topical issues in ethnolinguistic psychology, such as the correlation between verbal and non-verbal behavior of individuals from different cultural communities and the reciprocal relationship between language and thought. Furthermore, it assists in compiling explanatory and comparative English-Vietnamese dictionaries. In addition, the research results can be applied in teaching Vietnamese and English as foreign languages. Teaching or learning a language as a foreign language involves not only teaching and learning how to use that language but also teaching and learning how to think and knowledge about the cultural and historical traditions of the people who speak it. Through the presentations in the three chapters, the thesis draws some observations and conclusions about the naming characteristics, semantic structure, and symbolic meaning of the names of phenomena related to wedding customs in Vietnamese and English, as well as the thinking characteristics of the two native-speaking communities. The research results of the thesis also contribute further evidence to affirm the universal and general conclusions that Nguyen Duc Ton stated in his monograph based on other lexical-semantic fields such as: names of animals, plants, body parts, etc. 12. Practical Application The research results of the thesis can be applied in dictionary compilation, in teaching Vietnamese and English as foreign languages, and in compiling textbooks on cultural studies. 13. Summary of the findings of the thesis: This thesis aims at researching semantic characteristics of words expressing wedding customs of Vietnamese people (compared to English). Wedding customs exist in many countries all around the world. However, these customs differ across cultures around the world and not everyone can fully understand what is meant by these words. Thus, an understanding of words expressing wedding customs of Vietnamese and English people will provide a better knowledge of cultural characteristics of both nations. In addition, the thesis paves the way to new directions and approaches to current issues of psycho-linguistics of human groups such as the correlation between verbal and non-verbal behavior of individuals who belong to different cultural groups and interactive relations between language and mind. Besides, this thesis can be used as reference materials for dictionary compilation and teaching Vietnamese or English as a foreign language because in learning a language, it is important not only to learn how to use a language but also to learn how to think in that language and to acquire knowledge of the traditional culture and history of the people who speak that language as their native language. Through this content, the writer of this thesis has drawn some conclusions on characteristics of nomination, semantic structure and symbolic meanings of Vietnamese and English wedding custom phenomena as well as characteristics of ways of thinking by both nations.
