10. Summary of the thesis results:
Depression is a mental disorder characterized by typical symptoms such as sadness, decreased interest in life, and fatigue. The incidence of depressive disorders is increasing among children and adolescents, causing significant difficulties in their studies, social interactions, recreation, and self-care. Through a case study approach in clinical psychology, this thesis assessed, diagnosed, characterized a case, and provided psychological intervention for an adolescent with special circumstances living in a social welfare institution in Hanoi. The results of the study, assessment, and intervention showed that adolescents with moderate depression exhibited typical signs such as sadness, anxiety due to emotional disconnection, difficulty in thinking, and some aggressive behaviors. Factors associated with depression in adolescents from disadvantaged backgrounds living in social welfare facilities include separation from foster mothers and conflict with caregivers. Intervention results showed that a combination of behavioral activation therapy, psychological counseling, and yoga practice initially yielded positive results. Evaluations after eight psychological intervention sessions indicated improvements in interpersonal relationships, reduced depressive symptoms, and better adaptation to daily life.
11. Practical applications:
The results obtained from the assessment, diagnosis, and case study of a depressed adolescent show that combining behavioral activation therapy and yoga is an effective intervention method that reduces depressive symptoms, improves social relationships, and enhances adaptation to daily life. Behavioral activation therapy and yoga also have clear and easy-to-implement procedures. Therefore, the potential for applying these therapies in the prevention and intervention of depression in adolescents is very high.
