7. Thesis topic: The linking value and argument value of some conjunctions in scientific articles (through the Military Medicine and Pharmacy Journal).
8. Major: Linguistics; Code: 8229020.01
9. Scientific advisor: Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Van Tinh
10. Summary of thesis results:
- The thesis has presented the basic theoretical issues of Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis Theory. Including: 1) Basic concepts (text, discourse, utterance, coherence, etc.); 2) Cohesion - the most basic characteristic of a text; 2) Cohesion means and textual cohesion methods.
- In the next part of the theoretical chapter, the thesis presents in detail the conjunction (as a means of direct connection) with its specific features in form and identification expressions. On that basis, the thesis points out the conjunctions in Vietnamese (nearly 100 words) and from the classification criteria to indicate 9 different categories. The thesis selects utterances with conjunctions according to the category of results - summary and uses the text as articles in the Military Medicine and Pharmacy journal for the survey.
- One chapter of the thesis (chapter 2) focuses on describing and analyzing the selected conjunctions (therefore/therefore, therefore, therefore, in short, generally/generally…) to indicate the formal connection (structural connection) of the utterances in which these conjunctions are present. These conjunctions indicate the logical relationship between two utterances (subject and concluding utterance).
- Chapter 3 is the chapter that exploits the argumentative value and semantic value of statements (possibly a chain of statements) in the interpretation of scientific texts. The chain of statements with linking words is considered a "sub-text" and this sub-text forms a "sub-argument" in which the premise statements (subject statements) are one (or more) arguments leading to the conclusion (in the concluding statement). The thesis proves that the subject statement and the concluding statement are not just one statement but can be n statements (n ≥ 2). Considering each case of linking words in turn, we see that it is this expansion of statements that makes the argument more diverse, vivid and convincing.
11. Practical application:
- The thesis results will help: 1) Read and understand the text more clearly and correctly; 2) Help summarize the text (summarize, summarize) of scientific texts quickly and accurately; 3) Help teach and learn Vietnamese systematically; 4) Help compile Vietnamese function word dictionary...
12. Further research directions: The author hopes to expand and deepen the issues raised in the thesis at a higher research level (graduate student).
13. Published works related to the thesis: None

7. Official thesis title: Meaning of Cohesion and Argument of some Linking Words in Scientific Papers (from Journal of Military Pharmaco - Medicine).
8. Major: Linguistics Code: 8229020.01
9. Supervisors: Assoc.Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tinh
10. Summary of the findings of the thesis:
This paper study has presented theoretical fundamental theories of text linguistics and Discourse Analysis including basic concepts (text, discourse, Utterance, coherence and Cohesion ..); 2) Cohesion - the most pivotal characteristics of a text; 3) Cohesive devices and techniques in a text.
In the subsequent chapter, this study focuses on the analysis of conjunction devices in detail (as subordinating conjunctions) which are characterized by forms and expressions of identity. On that basis, roughly 100 conjunctions in Vietnamese have been analyzed in this thesis, thereby introducing nine categories according to the criteria for the classification of conjunctions. Additionally, the study included statements containing conjunctions describing results and summary via an investigation and analysis of scientific papers published in Journal of Military Pharmaco – Medicine.
The chapter 2 gives a detailed description of conjunctions selected in the study (such as therefore, because, so, accordingly, briefly, general speaking/broad speaking) where the structural connections of these statements have been exposed. These conjunctions signal the logical relationship between two statements (introduction and conclusion).
Chapter 3 explores the argument and semantic value of statements (possibly chains of sentences in the interpretation of scientific texts. These chains themselves consist of transitional words were considered as “sub-text”, which in turn formed a sub-argument. The premise statements (subject) are mainly one (or more) arguments constituting the conclusion (end of statements)
The thesis also gave the evidences that there might be more (n) statements rather than one statement formed from subjects and conclusions (n ≥ 2). Taking each sentence including conjunctions into consideration, we can observe that it is the expansion of the statement that makes the argument more diverse and persuasive
11. Practical applicability, if any:
The findings of this thesis contribute to make it 1) Clear and accurate comprehension and interpretation; 2) Helpful for more quick and concise text summarization; 3) More systematic in learning and teaching the Vietnamese language; 4) To facilitate the compilation process of Vietnamese Non-Verbal Dictionary.
12. Further research directions, if any: Further study on these issues is needed.
13. Thesis-related publications: No
