Firstly, this thesis provides a general introduction to the history and literature of Buddhism, specifically Buddhist poetry, through representative magazines in Southern Vietnam during the period 1955-1975. The thesis briefly introduces Zen masters Vạn Hạnh, Thích Quảng Đức, Thích Nhất Hạnh, Vũ Hoàng Chương, Trụ Vũ, and Nguyễn Phố, and compiles a list of poems published in the "Vạn Hạnh" magazine by several prominent authors. From this, the thesis presents the values of Buddhist thought in Vietnamese literature, like a gentle breeze blowing into the reader's soul, creating a vibrant, luminous garden, exuding a light and serene fragrance.
Secondly: The thesis presents the concept of Symbolism according to literary theorists, who consider it a "means of visual and expressive creation" with "multiple meanings" in literary works. According to SXPocxo: "A symbol is a sign that depends on the object it represents, based on a common rule, which is a shared association." This shows that symbols in literature have multiple meanings, abstract qualities, and cultural significance. The analysis of symbols depends on the customs, beliefs, etc., of each country, locality, and historical period.
Thirdly: This thesis studies two main and primary inspirations in the poetry published in the Van Hanh magazine: nationalistic and religious inspiration. Therefore, the poems in the Van Hanh magazine possess both depth in ideological content and captivating artistic expression. Following this, the thesis analyzes the meaning and value of the artistic space and time of the poetry in the Van Hanh magazine.
In summary, this thesis introduces the Van Hanh magazine and the history of Southern Buddhism during the years 1955-1975. Through this, we explore, research, and approach the natural and religious symbols, human imagery, and Buddhist philosophy expressed in the poems published in Van Hanh magazine, which have left a lasting impression on readers and inspired present and future generations to continue the endless flow of Buddhist literature. The thesis also examines the role of poetry in Van Hanh magazine in the national struggle against the US, creating a "front" of words and making a significant contribution to encouraging the spirit of fighting to protect religious freedom and defend the country.
