10. Summary of thesis results:

The Law on Marriage and Family of Vietnam stipulates: “Marriage is the relationship between husband and wife after marriage”. With such a view, marriage registration is an event that marks the legalization of the couple's life. However, in the Vietnamese cultural tradition, this legalization also requires the recognition of the families and relatives of both sides through the marriage ceremony. Particularly for Catholicism, the marriage ceremony is held under the witness of God. In the Gospel it is written: “What God has joined together, man must not separate”, meaning that when two people are married to form a family, they are not allowed to separate or divorce. Thus, marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics are both connected and recognized and blessed by God. The question is how does the ritual of Catholics affect the characteristics and sustainability of interfaith marriages? The results of quantitative and qualitative research aim to clarify the characteristics and sustainability of interfaith marriages through understanding the characteristics of couples when they get married as well as the implementation of the main functions of family life such as:

  • Emotional satisfaction function

  • Function of guiding and educating children

  • Sexual satisfaction and regulation function

  • Economic function

The topic also points out the impact of Christianity on the sustainability of interfaith marriages.

11. Summary of the findings of the thesis:

Vietnamese Law of Marriage and Family states that "Marriage is a relationship between husband and wife after marriage". From this perspective, the registration of marriage is an event that marks the legitimization of conjugal life. However, in the traditional culture of Vietnam, the validation also requires recognition of both sides of the family and kinship through the marriage ceremony. As for the Christian religion, the marriage ceremony is celebrated in the presence of God. The Gospel says that "what God has joined together, no human being must be separate." It means that separation or divorce is not allowed after the couples have married into a family. Thus, marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics are coherent and are recognized and blessed by God. The question is how the Christian marriage impacts the sustainability and characteristics of the different religious marriage.

Results of quantitative and qualitative research will clarify the matter of sustainability and characteristics of different religious marriages through understanding the characteristics of the couples' marriage as well as the implementation of the main functions of family life, such as:

- The function of emotional satisfaction

- The function of the orientation and education of children

- The function of sexual satisfaction

- The function of economy.

This thesis also indicates the influence of Christianity on the sustainability of the different religious marriage.

The applicability of the research in practice: The results of this study can be used as a reference for managers at all levels, and the field that has new perspectives on marriage between Catholics and non-Catholics in particular, and the Christian marriage and family in general. Simultaneously, these results also contribute to enrich the study of the family as well as a reference source for learners and students, who are researching the area of marriage and family.
