Firstly, the focus of this study is to examine the similarities and differences in greetings between English and Vietnamese. The literature review of this thesis is based on theories of linguistic behavior, politeness strategies, pragmatics, and culture.
Secondly, the study identifies the distinctive features of greeting behavior and compares English and Vietnamese greetings to discover cultural similarities and differences. Based on this, the research can offer some suggestions for using greetings effectively for English and Vietnamese learners, helping them communicate appropriately.

man, the focus of this study is on the cultural similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese greeting categories. The theoretical background of the thesis is based on theories of language, communication, cross-cultural communication, definition of speech acts, classifications of speech acts, politeness theory including positive and negative politeness strategies.
Initially, the features of English and Vietnamese greeting categories were highlighted. By comparing the greeting and invitation of Vietnamese and English to find out the cultural similarities and differences, the study can suggest some implications in using greeting categories for Vietnamese learners of English to help them communicate properly.
