11. Summary of the thesis results
The thesis is structured into 2 chapters and 5 sections, not including the introduction, conclusion, bibliography, and appendices.
Chapter 1: General overview of Buddhist educational activities and Buddhism in Kien Giang province.
Chapter 2: The current state of Buddhist education in Kien Giang province.
The thesis clarifies:
Buddhism was introduced to Vietnam; it has continuously developed and blended with the national cultural flow, quickly adapting to the customs, traditions, beliefs, and mindset of the local people. With its adaptable nature, Buddhism has naturally permeated the lives of the Vietnamese people.
For over two thousand years since Buddhism was introduced to Vietnam, it has quickly integrated into social life. Every action and idea in daily life is imbued with Buddhist principles in all aspects: culture, society, ethics, lifestyle, communication, responsibility, and human duty. Buddhism has left a profound mark on the nation's history, deeply ingrained in the consciousness of Vietnamese people across generations.
Therefore, Buddhism is considered a religion with a long-standing tradition closely associated with our nation and plays an important role in the life of the Vietnamese people. Among the activities of Buddhism in Vietnamese society today, education is indispensable. Buddhist education includes both internal activities within the Buddhist Sangha, with a system of schools offering training from elementary, secondary, college, university, master's, and doctoral levels in Buddhist studies. In addition, Buddhism also carries out its educational activities through other outward-facing activities such as: charitable activities, charitable work at preschools, private schools, vocational schools, and correctional facilities…
Vietnamese Buddhism in the 20th century and its current state offers us valuable lessons in building a modern education system with relatively complete facilities and training quality that meets the requirements of the current situation. A Buddhist (Northern tradition) education system in Kien Giang province, socialized both internally within the Buddhist organization and actively engaging with the outside world, will continue to develop in the coming years.
This goal requires the concerted efforts of the Buddhist Church from the central to the grassroots level, as well as the attention, support, and assistance of the Party, Government, Front, and socio-political organizations. Buddhist education activities in Kien Giang province, over a long period, have undertaken many meaningful actions to better care for social welfare alongside the local government. Initially, Buddhist education activities in the province also faced considerable difficulties.
However, with dedicated guidance and policy support, the Buddhist education activities in the province have overcome difficulties, not shying away from challenging tasks, and demonstrating the collective determination to excel in Buddhist education and outward-oriented social volunteer work. Overall, the education and training of Buddhist monks by the Kien Giang Buddhist Association has achieved many successes, constantly learning, exploring, and independently cultivating and developing wisdom.
Thanks to the timely guidance and support from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, and relevant agencies, departments, and organizations, Buddhist activities have achieved good results. The Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in Kien Giang province has always promoted a spirit of democracy, harmony, internal unity, and concerted effort, utilizing collective wisdom. In addition, the focused, thorough, and effective guidance of the Venerable Head of the Executive Board, the Venerable Deputy Head of the Standing Committee, and the Venerables in charge of various sects, as well as the insightful, quick, and effective advice and solutions provided by the Sangha Secretariat, have been crucial.
Taking advantage of the support of state agencies at all levels, and the agreement and support of monks, nuns, and Buddhist followers, all Buddhist tasks assigned by the higher-level Buddhist Association have been successfully completed. The affiliated departments and the Buddhist Executive Boards of districts and cities always strive to complete their Buddhist work, contributing to the overall achievements of the Buddhist Association of Kien Giang province.
Despite the achievements, there are still limitations such as inadequate facilities and teaching and learning equipment; a lack of diverse teaching staff with strong pedagogical skills; and uneven age distribution among students in each cohort, affecting their ability to absorb the lectures.
Current Buddhist training programs focus heavily on intellectual development and neglect the spiritual practice of Buddhist teachings. A significant portion prioritize academic degrees, neglecting the practice of dignified conduct and virtuous conduct; some are influenced by social connections and material possessions. This diminishes the image of a pure and dignified teacher, obscures Buddhist humility, and negatively impacts the Buddhist Sangha as a whole.
Many young monks and nuns possess numerous degrees and high qualifications, but their Buddhist wisdom, dignified conduct, and fearless dedication do not yet match their academic achievements. There are not many exemplary young monks and nuns who have dedicated themselves to overcoming difficulties; they lack the courage to contribute their opinions on the positive and negative aspects of the Buddhist Sangha in order to find timely solutions.
