The thesis, titled "Students and Facebook: An Analysis of Social Capital Development" (a survey conducted at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology), highlighted several impacts of Facebook on the social capital development of current students. Through studying Facebook and approaching theories of social interaction, the thesis analyzed the use of Facebook among students, identifying the positive, negative, and peripheral effects of Facebook use on their social interaction. Practical examples confirmed the strong influence of this social network on students' habits and lifestyles.
By participating in Facebook, students can connect, exchange ideas, and interact with different groups, strengthening their relationships within the small or large groups they participate in. This allows them to share information effectively and efficiently, creating a solid social network that enhances their social capital development on Facebook.
Facebook influences students' lives in many areas. Students are often affected by information on Facebook regarding economic, political, cultural, social, and academic aspects. However, the level of influence and impact varies depending on the specific information. Students in their first year are more affected by Facebook information than those in their final year.
Besides its positive aspects, using Facebook can have negative consequences for students' real lives, such as: reduced ability to communicate in real life, increased susceptibility to online opinions, decreased problem-solving skills, difficulty sharing real-life issues; interactions in the virtual world can obscure one's true self, affecting self-affirmation and the ability to improve oneself in real life; Facebook gradually changes students' interaction habits, causing many good habits to be lost and replaced by bad ones, negatively impacting students.
Facebook is a social network, but it has created real social capital that significantly impacts students' lives through learning, finding accommodation, shopping, making new friends, etc. Factors such as school, gender, academic ability, and location of residence all show differences among students. Specifically, students at the University of Humanities use Facebook and its social connections more to obtain study materials, find accommodation, and make friends than students at the Posts and Telecommunications Institute. Similarly, female students are more likely to leverage their Facebook connections to find housing than male students.
Thus, this research has provided us with a better understanding of the current state of Facebook use among students. It has also revealed some aspects of Facebook's influence on student life, particularly on the development of social capital. Facebook has multifaceted impacts on students' academic activities, entertainment, and social relationships. Overall, Facebook makes students' lifestyles more dynamic and extroverted. However, many issues remain that require further research.
11. Practical applications: This study analyzes and identifies the positive, negative, and peripheral impacts of social media (Facebook) on the social capital of current students. Based on this analysis, it draws conclusions and makes recommendations aimed at the ultimate goal of effectively managing Facebook usage.
