Linguistic taboos are both a part of language and a unique expression of a nation's culture. This thesis mainly compares the phenomenon of linguistic taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese to understand the linguistic and cultural characteristics of each ethnic group (China and Vietnam) in general, and the characteristics of linguistic taboos in particular. The thesis consists of 3 chapters: Chapter 1: Primarily presents the concept of linguistic taboos and related theories. Chapter 2: Introduces the phenomena of linguistic taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese: taboos related to naming, taboos related to vulgar words, taboos related to using words with inauspicious meanings; taboos in the use of euphemisms. It summarizes the characteristics of linguistic taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese. Chapter 3 compares the phenomenon of taboo words in Chinese and Vietnamese, drawing out similarities and differences in linguistic taboos between Chinese and Vietnamese in terms of language, society, and culture, such as: the structural forms of taboo words in both Chinese and Vietnamese include both primary and derivative language taboos. In addition to derivative and primary language taboos, Vietnamese also includes a type of semantically transferred language taboo; linguistic taboos in both Chinese and Vietnamese are primarily influenced by Confucian thought, but also reflect the distinct culture of their respective nations; etc. This chapter also identifies the causes of the similarities and differences in linguistic taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese: the causes include cultural factors, cognitive factors, and social factors, but the main cause is the distinct culture of each nation. This thesis has contributed to understanding the linguistic and cultural characteristics of each ethnic group (China and Vietnam) in general, and the linguistic taboos of each ethnic group in particular. 11.
