Summary of the results of the thesis: Each ethnic group and each country has the phenomenon of language taboos. Language taboos are both a part of the language and a unique expression of the culture of a nation. The thesis mainly compares the phenomenon of taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese, to study the cultural and linguistic characteristics of each ethnic group (China and Vietnam) in general, and the characteristics of language taboos of each ethnic group in particular. The content of the thesis includes 3 chapters: Chapter 1: Mainly presents the concept of language taboos and basic theories related to language taboos. Chapter 2: Introduces the phenomena of language taboos between Chinese and Vietnamese: the taboo of calling names, the taboo of vulgar words, the taboo of using words with bad meanings; taboos in euphemisms. Overview of the characteristics of language taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese. Chapter 3: Comparing the phenomenon of taboos in Chinese and Vietnamese, drawing out the similarities and differences in taboos between Chinese and Vietnamese in terms of language, society, and culture, such as: the structural form of taboo words in the two languages Chinese and Vietnamese both have taboos in the native language and taboos in the derived language. In addition to taboos in the derived language and taboos in the native language, Vietnamese also has a type of taboos in the transferred language; taboos in the two languages Chinese and Vietnamese, mainly influenced by Confucian ideology, but also show the distinct culture of each nation; etc. This chapter also finds the causes of the formation of similarities and differences in taboos in the Chinese and Vietnamese languages: the causes of similarities and differences include cultural factors, cognitive factors, and social factors, but the main cause is the distinct culture of a nation.
