The relationship between cinema and urban areas has been studied by many countries in the world, but Vietnam has hardly studied it, with only a few scattered articles on this issue. Even though independent films have existed for nearly two decades in Vietnam, there are still very few reviews of this film genre. Independent films are a genre of films that take urban areas as the subject of reflection. Through analyzing urban space in independent films, we will understand the spiritual portrait of Vietnamese society in the transition period from rural to urban areas.

Firstly, the thesis systematizes the concepts of independent film, urban and urbanization; studies the history of the development of Vietnamese urban areas and the history of Vietnamese independent films. From there, it points out the close relationship between urban space (URS) and independent films. In independent films, URS is not only a context but also a living entity with its own discourse.

Second, analyze urban culture as a cultural system in the films Bi, Don't Be Afraid! (Phan Dang Di), Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere (Nguyen Hoang Diep), Homostratus (Síu Pham) with 2 aspects: urban culture from the level of aesthetic images and cultural symbols and urban culture in the interaction between value systems.

Third, analyze KGĐT as a system of cinematic language, through analyzing specific elements such as: staging (set, lighting, costumes), filming, editing and sound.
