10. Summary of the thesis results:
The relationship between cinema and urban life has been studied extensively in many countries around the world, but Vietnam has seen almost no research on this topic, with only a few scattered articles. Even independent films, which have existed in Vietnam for nearly two decades, have received very little critical acclaim. Independent films are a genre that focuses on urban life. By analyzing urban spaces in independent films, one can understand the spiritual portrait of Vietnamese society during its transition from rural to urban areas.
Firstly, this thesis systematizes the concepts of independent film, urban areas, and urbanization; it explores the history of urban development in Vietnam and the history of independent Vietnamese films. From this, it points out the close relationship between urban space and independent films. In independent films, urban space is not just a setting but a vibrant entity with its own discourse.
Secondly, the analysis examines the concept of cultural space as a cultural system in the films "Bi, Don't Be Afraid!" (Phan Đăng Di), "Flapping Wings in the Air" (Nguyễn Hoàng Điệp), and "Homostratus" (Síu Phạm) from two perspectives: cultural space from the level of aesthetic imagery and cultural symbols, and cultural space in the interaction between value systems.
Thirdly, the analysis of cinematic language is conducted as a system of cinematic language, through the analysis of specific elements such as: staging (setting, lighting, costumes), cinematography, editing, and sound.
