This thesis studies the communication of gender equality messages in Vietnamese journalism today. The thesis systematizes and clarifies theoretical and practical issues regarding communication of gender equality in the press. The author clarifies several concepts to provide a general overview of the research topic; presents the viewpoints, policies, and guidelines of the Party and the laws of the State on gender equality and the role of the press in communicating gender equality; and develops a theoretical framework on the content and form of communication messages on gender equality.
In Chapter 2, the author surveyed the current state of gender equality communication messages on online newspapers including Vietnam Women's Newspaper, Hanoi Women's Newspaper, Ho Chi Minh City Women's Newspaper, and New Women's Magazine regarding the frequency, content, and form of communication messages. The survey revealed that gender equality communication messages on the surveyed newspapers and magazines have achieved success, such as: the surveyed newspapers and magazines are highly reputable, have a large readership, especially female readers; they have successfully provided unlimited information; and the gender equality communication messages are diverse and multimedia-rich, updated through online newspapers. Articles incorporate images, videos, and information boxes. Another success in building gender equality communication messages on online newspapers is their interactivity. However, limitations remain.
This thesis identifies the challenges and proposes five solutions to improve the effectiveness of conveying gender equality messages through media in Vietnam today.
