Summary of the thesis results: Besides the introduction and conclusion, the thesis consists of three main chapters: - Chapter 1: Synthesis of theoretical research and practical experience in compiling dictionaries for primary school children in Vietnam and abroad. This shows that most issues in creating dictionaries for primary school children have been researched and applied in dictionary works by foreign authors. In Vietnam, the number of studies and dictionaries is not large, so there has not been such research and application. - Chapter 2: Survey of Vietnamese dictionaries for primary school students in Vietnam. The survey results show that theoretical and practical research on creating explanatory Vietnamese dictionaries for primary school students has not received adequate attention. Regarding vocabulary, Vietnamese dictionaries for primary school students lack a clear and logical theoretical basis for selecting entries. In terms of definition, many aspects fail to meet the criteria of a good definition and are not suitable for the cognitive and psychological development of the target users. Regarding examples, the selection method suffers from many fundamental errors in principle, only applying the traditional method of providing examples. Illustrations are neglected, few in number, unsystematic, and only illustrate a few specific words. - Chapter 3. Based on the results of theoretical research and surveys of dictionaries both domestically and internationally, this thesis proposes a model for a Vietnamese explanatory dictionary for elementary school students aged 8-11. This dictionary is designed on a clear theoretical basis. The initial visualizations of the macro and micro structure of the dictionary, although only in the sketch stage, provide basic guidelines for those with dedication to make it a reality. 11. Practical applications: Applying the dictionary model developed in the thesis to the compilation of a Vietnamese explanatory dictionary for primary school students. 12. Summary of the findings of the thesis: A part from the Introduction and Conclusion, the thesis has been designed with 3 main chapters: - Chapter 1: Synthetizing theoretical studies and practical experiences in compiling dictionaries for learners at primary-school level inland and overseas shows a fact that most of issues relating to such operations have already been studied and applied to dictionary compilation by foreign researchers. While the number of the studies and dictionaries in Vietnam are too small to achieve the respective researches and applications. - Chapter 2: Surveying various types of Vietnamese dictionaries compiled for learners at primary-school level in Vietnam. The findings show that theoretical studies and practical experiences in compiling Vietnamese explanatory dictionaries for learners at primary-school level have not been paid due attention to. As far as the word table is concerned, Vietnamese dictionaries for learners at primary-school level fail to have a clear and appropriate theoretical basis for selecting entries. In terms of definitions, quite a few of them are far from being met the standards of a good one, incompatible with development of cognition and age-group psychology of using targets. Regarding the examples, the selections have revealed untold errors in terms of principle, as they are only chosen by using traditional way. Illustrative figures and pictures fail to be taken into full consideration, accounting for a small number with non-systematic characteristics and just being able to illustrate for a few specific entries. - Chapter 3: With the findings from theoretical studies and surveying various types of dictionaries inland and overseas, the thesis has suggested/proposed a model of Vietnamese Explanatory Dictionary for learners at primary-school level at the age between 8 and 11 years old. This Dictionary is built on the basis of a clearly theoretical background. Although the initial concepts of macro-structure and micro-structure of the dictionary have just been roughly shaped, they are basic directions for those who are confidential to make it come into being. 11. Feasibility of practical application: Applying the model of dictionary proposed by the thesis into compiling Vietnamese explanatory dictionary for learners at primary-school level. 12.
