Onomatopoeia and mimetic words constitute an incredibly vast vocabulary, appearing in almost all languages. Even in our native language, it's difficult to know all of them. Imagine if onomatopoeia and mimetic words didn't exist in human language; our communication would surely lose its charm and the hidden meanings contained within each word. The role of onomatopoeia and mimetic words is extremely important. They embellish, decorate, and give soul to each word and sentence, making the ordinary things around us more interesting, rich, and diverse. This thesis has shown how to classify mimetic words in Vietnamese, their grammatical and semantic meanings, as well as their function and position in sentences. Simultaneously, we also conducted an initial survey on the use of onomatopoeia in headlines on three major online newspapers to provide preliminary observations on the usage and appeal of onomatopoeia in headlines to attract readers' attention to the article's content. The more we understand and learn about onomatopoeia and mimetic words, the more we appreciate our language, and the clearer we see the essence and artistry in word usage and formation, as well as the unique and interesting aspects of our nation's thinking and beliefs. 11. Practical application: The research results of this project will also be helpful in compiling a dictionary of onomatopoeia in Vietnamese. 12. Further research directions: None 13. Summary of the findings of the thesis: This thesis studies the grammatical meanings and the semantic contents of Vietnamese simulated words. Onomatopoeia and pictorial words are a big part of the vocabulary which exists in most languages. The number of such words is so large that no one can know all the onomatopoeia even within their native tongues. Imagine what will happen to us if onomatopoeia and pictorial words do not exist in human languages. If so, our spoken language would lose a major part of its appeal, as well as the different nuances in its expressions. Therefore, it is undeniable that onomatopoeia and pictorial words play a very important role in human's communication. The words embellish speeches and bring the “soul” to the speeches. They make everything around us – including the ordinary and mundane ones – more interesting and diversified, thus enriching our lives. The thesis points out the method of classifying simulated words in Vietnamese language, grammatical and semantic content, as well as the functions, positions of the word class in sentences. We have also taken the first steps in conducting a study on the use of simulation words for the titles of articles on three prominent online newspapers, and give comments about their usage. The results demonstrate the attractiveness of using simulated words in articles' titles as a method to grab readers' attention. The deeper knowledge and understanding we have about onomatopoeia, the more we love our native language. Onomatopoeia can also show the wonderful art of Vietnamese people in using and constructing words, as well as the interesting thought processes behind such construction. 12. Practical applicability: The thesis's results are useful for compiling a Vietnamese simulation dictionary next time. 13. Further research directions: None 14. Thesis-related publications: The problems of Vietnamese Onomatopoeia
