Teaching Vietnamese to overseas Vietnamese teachers: Preserving the Vietnamese language and culture around the world.

The training course on teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese teachers abroad is an annual activity organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), to promote the preservation of the Vietnamese language and culture worldwide.
Implementing the major policies of the Party and Government in preserving and promoting the cultural and linguistic values ​​of the nation.
In 2024, the Training Course on Teaching Vietnamese to Overseas Vietnamese Teachers was held from December 1st to 15th, 2024, in Hanoi and several northern provinces, attracting the direct participation of over 40 overseas Vietnamese teachers from 9 countries and territories. These teachers are dedicated to passing on cultural values ​​and preserving the Vietnamese language to their children and future generations of Vietnamese people abroad.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Manh Dong, Vice Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, said that in recent years, the training course on Vietnamese language teaching methods for overseas Vietnamese teachers has received enthusiastic participation from teachers and volunteers from many countries, demonstrating the great need for teaching and learning Vietnamese among our overseas community. First organized in 2013, after 11 years, the training course has attracted nearly 900 overseas Vietnamese teachers, making a positive contribution to the development of the Vietnamese language teaching and learning movement in many overseas Vietnamese communities.

Emphasizing that language is the soul of the nation, a bridge connecting generations of Vietnamese people wherever they may be, Deputy Chairman Nguyen Manh Dong affirmed that the Party and State always pay deep attention to preserving and promoting the cultural values, traditions, and language of the nation, and to fostering the preservation of Vietnamese cultural identity in the Vietnamese community abroad. Notably, Resolution 36-NQ/TW of the Politburo always serves as a guiding principle for work related to Vietnamese people abroad, including activities supporting the community in preserving Vietnamese culture and language.
In August 2022, the Prime Minister approved the Project on Honoring the Vietnamese Language in Overseas Vietnamese Communities for the period 2022-2030. The project has received a positive response from a large number of communities in many places, with many vibrant, diverse, and substantive activities, initially creating a strong transformation in the movement of teaching and learning the Vietnamese language in overseas Vietnamese communities.

With dedication, responsibility, expertise, and experience, the faculty of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is committed to providing the best possible value to students participating in the training courses.
The 2024 training course on teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese teachers abroad is designed with the traditional prestige of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the pedagogical experience and passion of the lecturers, and a spirit of sincere cooperation, with the highest goal being: to transform lessons into practical tools, fostering a love for the Vietnamese language and belief in its enduring value among overseas Vietnamese attending the course.
Overseas Vietnamese teachers expressed their honor at returning to Vietnam to attend the training course on teaching the Vietnamese language.
A new feature of the training course is that, for the first time, the program is designed with two-thirds of its content consisting of practical pedagogical scenarios. Accordingly, teachers will not only be equipped with effective methods for teaching Vietnamese to foreigners, observe Vietnamese lessons at primary schools, and practice teaching skills, but will also gain valuable knowledge about Vietnamese culture, history, and the richness of the national language through practical experiences at historical sites and landmarks in Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, and Bac Ninh.
The lecturers from the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language selected to participate in the program are leading experts in the field of language teaching methodology, educators who have received formal training or further education abroad in the fields of linguistics, social sciences, and humanities. They also form the core team of scientists and educators behind the State Project: "Strengthening online Vietnamese language teaching for Vietnamese people abroad," and have directly and indirectly contributed to the operation of the "Vietnamese Language Teaching Channel for Vietnamese People Abroad," launched in 2022 and currently serving hundreds of overseas Vietnamese annually in 25 countries worldwide.
Over 40 teachers who are Vietnamese expatriates in various countries around the world participated in the 2024 training course.
Teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad: A noble mission.
This is the appreciation that Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi - has for the relevant authorities and teachers who are Vietnamese expatriates in countries around the world and are involved in teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad.
Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam expressed that, for the faculty at VNU-USSH, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese has become a steadfast and enduring institution for over a decade, marking a continuous dedication to the teaching of Vietnamese language within the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies & Vietnamese Language and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Through the meaningful activities of the Committee and the highly humane policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in promoting the aspiration to spread the Vietnamese language throughout the world, the leading experts in Vietnamese language teaching from the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies & Vietnamese Language have continuously participated in training courses on teaching Vietnamese to overseas Vietnamese since the early 21st century, with the Faculty officially participating deeply in professional content from 2013 to the present.
 
Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam - Head of the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, delivered a speech at the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Training Course on Teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese Teachers Abroad.
“The presence of overseas Vietnamese students in Vietnam is always a particularly strong motivation for those of us who teach Vietnamese, because: teaching Vietnamese in Vietnam is already a responsibility, but teaching Vietnamese abroad to Vietnamese people is a noble mission in any context,” emphasized Dr. Le Thi Thanh Tam.
Ms. Hien Ni Sa, a teacher at Nguyen Du Lao-Vietnamese Bilingual School (Laos), shared her expectations for improving her teaching skills, learning more about modern pedagogical methods, and using textbooks and materials flexibly to inspire students during the training course.
Dr. Nguyen Thuy Anh - author of the book series "Hello Vietnamese" - exchanged ideas with trainees at the seminar "Sharing methods for teaching Vietnamese to children abroad" within the framework of the training course.
As a core and leading institution in Vietnam's higher education system, Vietnam National University, Hanoi has made exceptionally valuable contributions to the entire process of teaching, promoting, and spreading the Vietnamese language and cultural identity to the world.
From 2020 to the present, Vietnam National University, Hanoi has developed a systematic and decisive investment strategy for its political mission concerning overseas Vietnamese. Pioneering and striving to build training programs and large-scale national and ethnic projects, Vietnam National University, Hanoi has left its mark on humanistic education strategies and keen university management vision, demonstrated through nearly five years of decisive investment and completion of the "Project to Enhance Online Vietnamese Language Teaching for Overseas Vietnamese." The model of this key project has contributed to transforming academic values ​​into practical applications of science and technology, aiming to effectively serve over 5.3 million overseas Vietnamese.
As a member of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has directly undertaken the mission of "teaching Vietnamese to international students, developing teaching methods, and training high-level interpreters," a mission entrusted to it since 1968 (from the Department of Vietnamese Language at Hanoi University, now the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi). With over 60 years of tradition and 56 years since its establishment, the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, has become one of the most prestigious institutions in Vietnam for teaching Vietnamese to foreigners.
From 2012 to 2020, the Department of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, successfully completed six key projects that contributed significantly to the international Vietnamese language training system. These included: successfully compiling the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, applicable nationwide and in many countries; successfully compiling the format for Vietnamese language proficiency assessment tests based on the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework for Foreigners, applicable nationwide and in many countries; systematically and professionally developing a training program for Vietnamese language teachers for foreigners; training Vietnamese language teachers for overseas Vietnamese for the Government (over 10 courses with thousands of teachers from many countries around the world) and effectively meeting the demand for training Vietnamese language teachers for overseas Vietnamese in accordance with the spirit of Resolution 36 of the Politburo; and being the lead institution for the project to strengthen online Vietnamese language teaching for overseas Vietnamese. Successfully compiled the Vietnamese language teaching framework for Vietnamese people abroad based on the Vietnamese language proficiency framework for foreigners (part of the project "Improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning Vietnamese for Vietnamese people abroad," Decision No. 14/QD-TTg, dated January 6, 2017).
In August 2024, at the Fourth World Conference of Overseas Vietnamese, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in recognition of its significant, outstanding, and exemplary contributions to the work related to overseas Vietnamese.
