Scientific AdvisorDr. Nguyen Huu Chien – Former Deputy Director of Central Psychiatric Hospital No. 1, Head of the Department of Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; also in charge of managing the Mental Health Department, E Hospital.
11. Summary of project results:
The project applied Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the intervention of a woman with a distorted perception of body image, with 14 individual therapy sessions. The results showed significant improvement in all three areas: cognitive (reduced negative thoughts about the body, development of a more compassionate self-image), emotional (reduced low self-esteem and anxiety), and behavioral (flexible eating habits, increased value-based behavior). Quantitative measures (BSQ, EAT-26, BDI-II) all showed significant reductions after therapy.
The novelty of the project lies in developing a detailed therapeutic process that integrates classic CBT techniques with mindfulness practices, focusing on personal values – an approach that has received little research in Vietnam in the field of body image in adult women.
12. Practical applications:
This project contributes to providing a reference model for cognitive-behavioral interventions for women with body image issues. The techniques used in therapy can be applied in clinical practice at counseling centers and psychiatric hospitals.
13. Future research directions:
Future research could expand the target population (males, adolescents), compare the effectiveness of different intervention models, or combine CBT with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to enhance treatment efficacy.
14. Published works related to the project:Are not

10. Summary of the findings of the project:
The project applied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in a 14-session individual intervention for a woman suffering from distorted body image perception. The results demonstrated significant improvements across three domains: cognition (reduced negative thoughts about the body, developed a more compassionate self-view), emotion (deceased shame and anxiety), and behavior (more flexible eating patterns and increased value-based actions). Quantitative measures (BSQ, EAT-26, BDI-II) all shown marked reductions after the intervention.
A notable contribution of the project is the development of a detailed treatment process that integrates classical CBT techniques with mindfulness and value-based practices – an approach that remains underexplored in Vietnam in the context of adult women with body image concerns.
12. Practical applicability, if any:
The project offers a practical reference model for applying CBT in therapeutic settings to treat women with body image concerns. The techniques can be implemented in clinical practice at counseling centers and clinics.
13. Further research directions, if any:
Future studies may expand the participant profile to include male clients or adolescents, compare the effectiveness of different intervention models, or integrate CBT with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to enhance treatment outcomes for body image-related issues.
