This thesis focuses on surveying and analyzing several projects and teaching materials for Vietnamese language instruction for Vietnamese children abroad – a target group learning Vietnamese as a heritage language. Based on theories of heritage languages, the thesis clarifies the characteristics of heritage learners, the principles of heritage language education in the context of globalization, and assesses the suitability of current programs and materials to the practice of teaching and learning Vietnamese overseas.

The survey covered projects related to teaching Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad and teaching materials such as "Fun Vietnamese," "My Vietnamese," "Greetings in Vietnamese," "Vietnamese Teaching Materials for Vietnamese Children Abroad – Levels 1 and 2," etc. The evaluation of these materials was based on criteria including content, methodology, compatibility with the target learners, and the potential for developing language and cultural skills. Through this, the thesis identifies the strengths, limitations, and potential for improvement of each material, while emphasizing the need for a comprehensive language policy for teaching Vietnamese as a heritage language.

Conclude:

This thesis affirms the crucial role of teaching Vietnamese as a heritage language in preserving and developing the cultural identity of Vietnamese communities abroad. To achieve high effectiveness, the development of teaching materials and curricula requires collaboration between language experts, educators, and the Vietnamese community overseas, with a flexible, diverse, and adaptable approach to the multicultural context.

12. Practical applications:The research findings of this thesis have significant potential for practical application in developing Vietnamese language learning programs for Vietnamese children abroad. Some suggestions regarding the integration of language education with the transmission of traditional culture will help children more easily acquire Vietnamese and gain a deeper understanding and connection to their cultural roots. Furthermore, clearly identifying the challenges facing the preservation and development of Vietnamese as a heritage language will provide relevant agencies with a basis for formulating and implementing language policies. These research findings can also be referenced and applied to similar case studies in the future.

13. Future research directions:Based on the research findings of this thesis, the following research directions can be further expanded and deepened: Firstly, broadening the scope and subjects of the survey to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the current state of using alternative Vietnamese language teaching materials for Vietnamese children living abroad in countries and territories with large Vietnamese populations. Secondly, researching currently digitized resources to assess their effectiveness for learners in the context of rapid digital transformation, in order to achieve the goal of teaching Vietnamese as a heritage language.
