8. Major: Clinical Psychology; Code: 8310402

9. Scientific supervisor:

- Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Duc, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

- Dr. Nguyen Thi Anh Thu, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

10. Summary of project results:

This project presents an overview of personality and personality disorders, focusing on conceptual issues, history, epidemiology, risk factors, impact on life functioning, clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria according to DSM-5-TR and ICD10, and the new ICD11 approach to schizoid personality disorder. Furthermore, the project analyzes current therapeutic approaches to schizoid personality disorder.

The client received cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Intervention results showed some improvement in life functions, a reduction in maladaptive behaviors, and increased ability to recognize negative emotions. However, maladaptive thoughts generally changed little, and manifestations of detachment/schizophrenia remained prominent.

11. Practical applications:

Based on theoretical issues and results obtained in clinical intervention practice, this project provides further evidence on the effectiveness and limitations of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy for schizoid personality disorder (without excluding factors related to therapist competence).

12. Future research directions: Clients exhibiting symptoms of schizoid personality disorder who underwent intervention in this project revealed significant deficits in social and cognitive functions within a not-too-unusual family and social context. This, when compared with theoretical perspectives on the causes of the disorder, suggests a physical condition related to the biological characteristics of the brain.

13. Published works related to the project: None.

11. Summary of the findings of the project:

The project presents an overview of personality and personality disorders, focusing on conceptual issues, history, epidemiology, risk factors, impacts on life functioning, clinical characteristics, diagnostic criteria according to DSM-5-TR and ICD-10, as well as the new ICD-11 approach to schizoid personality disorder. Furthermore, the project analyzes current therapeutic approaches for schizotypal personality disorder.

The client was treated using a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach. The intervention results showed some improvement in the client's life functioning, a reduction in maladaptive behaviors, and an increased ability to identify negative emotions. However, maladaptive thoughts generally remain unchanged, and detachment/schizoid manifestations remain prominent.

12. Practical applicability, if any:

Based on theoretical issues and the results obtained from clinical intervention practice, the project provides additional evidence on the effectiveness as well as the limitations of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for schzoid personality disorder (without excluding therapist competency factors).

13. Further research directions, if any:

The client exhibiting signs of schizoid personality disorder, who received intervention in this project, exhibits marked deficits in social cognition despite coming from a relatively unremarkable family and social background. When compared to theoretical perspectives on the disorder's etiology, these observations suggest an physical condition associated with the biological features of brain functioning.
