In recent years, cultural exchange between Vietnam and the global community has been developing, and linguistic contact between Vietnamese and other languages in general, and with Lao in particular, has been expanding. In this context, the thesis "A Survey of Phonetic Errors of Lao Speakers of Vietnamese" offers new and significant research, both theoretically and practically, contributing to the improvement and development of Vietnamese language teaching and learning for Lao speakers.

Besides the introduction and conclusion, the main body of the thesis consists of 3 chapters.

Chapter 1: The author addressed general theories related to phonetic errors. In it, the author analyzed and defined the concepts of "error," how errors are created, the types of errors, and presented viewpoints on phonetic characteristics in general and Vietnamese phonetics in particular.

Chapter 2: The author presents in detail and provides specific examples of the types of phonetic errors that Lao speakers often make when speaking Vietnamese. These include: errors in tone, errors in pronouncing initial consonants, errors in pronouncing vowel sounds (including medial consonants, vowels, and final vowels), and errors in pronouncing final consonants. In addition, the author also addresses spelling errors made by Lao speakers due to incorrect pronunciation.

Chapter 3: This thesis presents and analyzes in detail measures to overcome phonetic errors in Vietnamese for Lao learners. Lao learners need to distinguish between the phonetic systems of Vietnamese and their mother tongue, and on that basis, absorb new elements from the Vietnamese phonetic system. Learners need to practice pronouncing each letter, starting with simple words and gradually progressing to compound words and word sequences within sentences. They should practice reading Vietnamese poems, stories, and songs, and communicate regularly in Vietnamese. Furthermore, the help of teachers, lecturers, friends, and all Vietnamese people is essential to help Lao learners overcome Vietnamese pronunciation errors and improve the quality and accuracy of their Vietnamese language learning.

With this relatively new research direction, the author hopes that this study will not only point out pronunciation errors made by Laotians when speaking Vietnamese and suggest solutions, but also contribute a small part to improving the quality of Vietnamese language teaching for foreigners in general and Laotians in particular.
