10. Summary of thesis results:
Even when faced with contradictions and conflicts, diplomats still have a moderate euphemism to avoid fierce rhetorical conflicts, which further worsen the relationship between the two sides. The use of ambiguous language has become a mutually agreed habit in the international diplomatic community, which has left a place for ambiguous vocabulary, the characteristics of which are as follows:
First, first choose vocabulary with abstract semantics to form ambiguous expressions. Second, often choose vocabulary with extended extension, making the scope even wider. Third, choose objective and neutral vocabulary as much as possible to weaken the tendency of expressions.
The way to overcome ambiguous vocabulary is usually partial translation, which is when the speaker only uses one vocabulary or a few groups of words or only affects the part of speech, translation can use partial translation to slightly modify the meaning of the speech accurately.
The ambiguous meaning of a sentence is not only determined by the lexical ambiguities it contains, but also depends on the grammatical structure of the sentence and the pragmatic environment. Chinese speakers often use ambiguous word order and question-answer sentences, but Vietnamese speakers often use ambiguous word order. The choice of ambiguity has a great relationship with the topic. Different topics make speakers apply answers to follow the cooperative principle and the politeness principle, so as to achieve smooth speech behavior.
The way to overcome ambiguous vocabulary is often to translate the whole, which means that in the translation process, attention is paid to the organizational structure of the overall information, the translation style of the target language and the speaker's meaning, rather than just considering the translation of individual words.
11. Practical applicability: The research results of the thesis can make people understand the problem-solving methods of the spokespersons and leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, understand the interestingness and flexibility of ambiguous language in communication, moreover, for diplomatic officials, using language has a certain guiding meaning and promotes more communication and cooperation between China and Vietnam.
12. Further research directions: If there is time and conditions, we will increase the scope and research materials on the phenomenon of lexical ambiguity and syntactic ambiguity in Chinese diplomatic documents (compared with Vietnamese).
